Ramón Y Cajal was a contrarian when this was written, but he had great timing. In the late 19th century, it was fairly popular to believe that all the laws of physics had already been established—remaining progress would come from improvements in experimental methods. As typical with contrarians, Ramón y Cajal said some things that held up well and others that didn't. In the same book "Advice for a Young Investigator" that this excerpt is from he also gave his view of theorists: "Basically a theorist is a lazy person masquerading as a diligent one because it is easier to fashion a theory than to discover a phenomenon"!

I would say theories and discoveries go hand in hand, or maybe leapfrog each other. They both travel in the direction of the fog at the edge of our understanding.

This book tries to argue that we've got as close to objective truth about the universe as we'll ever do: https://www.amazon.com/End-Science-Knowledge-Twilight-Scient... and that most remaining science is just find of filling in the tiny bits. I personally don't expect anything that will change with respect to backwards time travel or faster than light travel.

Why are time machines and Starship Enterprises a good standard of scientific progress? Why not immorality, sentient computers, and stuff like that, which is equally science-fictiony but possible?

I recently watched the Back to the Future series and remember this scene where Doc Brown is musing on time travel.

How is that wrong? Clearly anyone who says that is being somewhat facetious / comedic.

Einstein backed up relativity by explaining a part of mercury's orbit that couldn't be explained by Newtonian physics.

I do wonder if every generation picks slightly higher hanging fruits in science will there come a time when a single human lifetime won't be enough to digest even the most specialised domain of science in order to build upon it

Right now we're getting help though. AI is able to search and sift and pick up patterns and find theories.

But you're right, will the human race ever "retire"?

Impressive how timeless this is. I would say the great problem of science right now is integrating all of the knowledge there is. It's time scientists stopped publishing dumb weakly connected PDFs, and start switching to a GitHub like pull request model. We could build a single strongly typed peer-reviewed repo of all of the world's scientific information, complete with definitions, experiment protocols and data, and…

Who claimed software engineering has all the answers? OP is proposing a tool that could be used to help integrate scientific knowledge better than the disintegrated system of PDF’s that exists, what’s wrong with that?

The 50% of the population who are blue collar workers aren’t going to retrain as particle physicist or theoretical computer scientists one they get their UBI.

I'm much more concerned about how we keep that portion of the population entertained enough to not cause trouble.

I am inclined to say the real problem is that smart people don’t have kids. But we’ll probably figure out how to make all babies intelligent before that becomes a problem. Incidentally, the problem you mention will also be solved in the same way.

It's not really a random walk in any way. Having designed artificial evolutionary systems, even if you screw up the implementation and the search space is really bumpy, it usually still makes progress, albeit very slowly.

The nature of a paradigm shift is that it recasts all the existing laws of nature as special cases of a more powerful, more general model of reality. Who knows, maybe we'll find that we actually are living in a simulation and then figure out how to hack the matrix. The idea of "travel" and "time" would become obsolete then; you'd just poke new values for your wave function into the simulation's RAM.

This seems implausible for many reasons, it seems more likely that if we're living in a simulation, we'll have trouble figuring out how to proloxify the feeblegarps.

genuine question - what do you mean by smart people? High IQ? Deep knowledge about mankind's place in the Universe / natural order? or their ability to maximise their own personal happiness over their lifetime? If the last point, then personal experience would suggest that having kids makes you happier person (once they are sleeping through the night)YMMV
