Why are you concerned if someone else does/doesn't do something? You can only control your own actions. Not protecting yourself by covering your webcam because the majority of others do not is not sound logic. I have a bright pink piece of tape over mine, and it is always a conversation starter. I have seen later that many people do wind up covering their webcam. It's not a 100% conversion rate, but it is definitely > 0%.

If a bug resulted on you being unable to post to Facebook sometimes, or you posting to your friends only what you meant to post to everybody (the setting called "public"), why would the mass media cover it?

Those persons stupid enough to leave a webcam uncovered when not in use deserve the consequences of their actions. Those who leave a microphone operational when not in use also deserve the consequences of their actions. Stupid people reap stupid rewards.
I absolutely hate this sentiment.
Technical people know about this stuff, and designed it to trick people who don't know about it into thinking it's benign. But sure blame the user. Seems to be a favored go-to for Facebook.

By finding a bug or oversight in how the dialog was implemented.

There are plenty of bugs that result in less data... many of them are called crashes and FB has them just like any other app.
