Is it better to be it's own site? People need to seek out a website, subreddits can be stumbled upon much more easily.

I'm sorry, they what? How recently was this? I was on r/nosleep's mod team and I don't recall the admins ever mentioning this to us.
(They did reach out to us to try and organize a live, in-person r/nosleep Halloween event, only to eventually ghost us about it. Twice.)

It'd be not-that-difficult, technology wise, to integrate with Reddit, with submissions instead going to changeaview.com instead of reddit.com's comment section.
Do you mean...
"with submissions [ALSO] going to changeaview.com [AND] reddit.com's comment section" ?
If the replies only went to changeaview.com the entire comment section would be blank when browsing via Reddit.

Even the traditional PHP forum has all kinds of senseless 'flare' on each post. Post counts, signup dates, eye catching signatures, etc. A large portion of the screen space on your typical forum is still dedicated to attention seeking behavior. IRC is better.
