We might be harder to monetize with ads but are we harder to monetize beyond that? This is kind of FUD. I’ve been running my own mail server for over a year now, and my E-mails don’t magically disappear into some blacklist. Do you have to be careful when configuring your server? As someone who's had his entirely legitimate, wholly none-spamming email accounts blacklisted (numerous times) because he used the same shared server as someone less than saintly, I can attest that this is actually a genuine and existant concern.

Sure, it's 'easy' to get around, by throwing more money and complexity at the problem, but it isn't some made up tale.

Right. But there's a certain amount of irony that people are ditching Chrome, while still using an OS which literally does spy on you.

Even Windows 10 seems much less creepy compared with what Google's become.

The browser is looked upon as the portal to the Internet.

When accessing web-sites over a public network, I sort of expect (not necessarily like or agree) to be tracked and others to know what I'm doing. I'm always in the mindset of "what ever I do within this window, others will see" (regardless of browser).

For what I do on my local desktop? No. Not at all.

I use FastMail with my own domain. I used to use Google Apps before it. But before switching email services, do yourself a favor and ditch webmail interfaces first. Pick up a desktop/native email client and switch to IMAP / SMTP. Having Google on your resume is in no way impressive in my opinion. I have reviewed plenty of resumes and been part of the interview process. Being a Google employee just doesn't matter.

Indeed. I even had one door closed by having Google on my resume! ("We've had bad luck with ex-Google types in the past")

This approach doesn't work in the real world because Google's consumers are neither perfectly informed nor perfectly rational. It also ignores the fact that major corporations can enlist the help of the US government in maintaining and extending their de facto monopolies.

We’re not talking about the case of individual users. If you have a monopoly position in one market, you cannot unfairly use it to give you an advantage in another market.

Imagine if Google started delisting sites with Facebook Partner Network ads on them...

The ease of switching is completely irrelevant.

I first tried DDG years ago. It really wasn't great. The results and astetics were not up to snuff. I went back to google. About a year ago I decided to try DDG again. I've been using DDG ever since. Maybe once a month I'll google something. I use chrome only for google products like gmail.

DDG sucks and hasn’t really improved at all. I’ve used it for a longtime but I use bangs endlessly. Unless you can provide some quantifiable metric to prove its “getting better” then it’s delusion getting the better of you.

DDG uses other search engines for results (such as bing), so unless you agree Bing is improving, it’s just a placebo.

DDG is only useful because we can all fall back on g!. It’s sad but true. There is still no substitution for Google search.
