Shortly after the accident, a few other Tesla drivers reported similar behavior approaching that exit. But on the other hand, gores like that can also trick human drivers. Especially if tired, with poor visibility. In heavy rain or whiteout, I typically end up following taillights. But slowly.

Except that software doesn't get tired, and conditions were good. So even if that could trick human drivers those conditions weren't present so do not apply to the case at hand.

Even the 'the driver’s hands were not detected on the wheel for six seconds prior to the collision' is suspect because it is known to be a pretty unreliable detection mechanism.

Besides, it doesn't matter: if the drivers hands were on the steering wheel they clearly weren't alert enough to hit the brakes or steer away from the impact so the point is entirely moot: autopilot was in full control of the car, whether the driver had their hands on the wheel or not to satisfy an alarm doesn't matter.

Try: Poland, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Greece, Slovenia, Slowakia, Czech Republic. Those are also part of the EU and road quality there varies wildly from the countries you use as your examples.

It does not, in any way, imply that pharmaceutical companies would do a better job if left to their own devices and market pressure .

There's a lot of sunlight between letting pharma companies run rampant and having the FDA. One could imagine private non-profit testing and qualifications standards organizations along the lines of the underwriters laboratories

And who will manage all that testing? A government entity? Because that would bring us back to the original point.

This is pretty apples-to-oranges. You see things like this in a lot of less dense U.S. areas as well. But in the crash example, it's right in the middle of an interchange, with the lane needing to form and rise quickly. Additionally, the gently rising metal barriers aren't safe in many situations because of their ability to launch cars. That's why they've been replaced by crash attenuators and sand/water barrels. Tesla does test the shit out of it before they release a patch. The problem is that users expectations of the systems performance suddenly get out of sync with what the car is going to do. Part of me wonders if there should be a very quick, unskipable, animated, easy to understand explanation of the patch notes before you can drive when they make material changes to core driving functionality.

Or make certain critical updates only part of a physical recall, which provides notice to users that behavior will chance.

That is not accurate. In fact one of the key features of radar processing is to find objects in the clutter, usually by filtering on Doppler shifts. As far back as the 1970s helicopter-mounted radars like Saiga were able to detect power lines and vertical masts. That one could do so when moving up to 270 knots and weighed 53kg.

For radar detecting a power line against the sky is easy. Detecting a power line against a wall is not. The same radar set that worked these wonders while flying would have been absolutely useless for a ground based vehicle.

But a car's radar doesn't need to detect a power line against a wall; it only needs to reliably detect the wall...
