Yep. Their docs inspire little hope that the protocol will be little more than niche. How to build on top of this protocol without requiring someone with domain specific knowledge is beyond what's offered. Cue XKCD protocols comic.

Matrix is gaining adoption throughout the open source world super quickly. There are screenshots, guides, and links to join all over the place. Given that, I'm really impressed that anyone looks at Matrix and thinks of it as "little more than niche".

Given that matrix describes itself as an open standard, neither of those aspects says much about the project other that there's either some goodwill or a PR department.

AFAIK, this is mostly intended as a secure messenger _for_ the government. Which makes sense - what are they supposed to use? WhatsApp? Twitter DM? Skype for Governments? But even if you’re not in the target demographic, you might benefit: The government will run a large installation and hopefully some code will find its way back to the OS version.

I don’t think it exists as a product, but I’d totally not be surprised if Skype for Business is used in government branches.

You can't run your own signal server. If that isn't huge then nothing is.

To be more precise you can run your own server but it would not connect to the rest of the network (so it's useless). Source code here: https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-Server

I can't even download FPGA toolchains like a regular person without an account saying I live in the US and a US VPN to support my claim. FPGAs still accounted as ammo, even if you get the dev boards from China. I'm looking at you, Xilinx.

I don't live in the US and downloaded the latest Xilinx tools earlier this week, don't work for a US company either.

Tigase XMPP server supports websocket out of the box as well (bosh as well)
