The reason windows is so popular in the home market is because it was in the 90s. businesses bought windows/office, and people brought the floppies home, which led to schools following suit, which lead to a generation thinking windows = computers.

However Microsoft capitalised on their position in the office, and it was far cheaper to buy a fully functioning computer at home with a copy of windows and office from work. Then schools were under pressure to provide what was normal.
