If one is HIV positive it would probably be a draw of the app to find only others who are also afflicted. Turning it off might result in some illegal decisions.
Illegal how?

#73If you are using Grindr on Android, install and use NetGuard. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.faircode.ne... https://github.com/M66B/NetGuard NetGuard is an open source local VPN that allows you to block DNS lookups to prevent calls to 3rd parties, and it does not require root access. Calls to all of the 3rd parties mentioned are blockable. Grindr does not need many domains to be operational to work,…

#76It's become clear over the last year there is a strong need for a data privacy regulatory agency in US government. I understand that regulation hampers growth, but the tech industry is mature and developed to the point that it's time to reel in "moving fast and breaking things" a bit.
Violating basic civil rights should not just result in the off chance of having to pay a fine. People like Zuckerberg belong in jail way more than the average drug dealer.

So you're going to pay to use it right? If this imaginary product managed to get 1% of Facebook to hand over their credit card. That would be the most wildly successful pay to use application in existence. Will never happen. Social Media sites rely on mass adoption, among those who refuse to pay for just about anything.
If "no pay" is an option most people will take it, if it isn't an option because the mechanisms that make it possible are banned then people will pay - or there will be no service. This isn't physics; the laws of user behaviour are mutable, and legislation is completely possible. The outcome of the erosion of privacy is the end of our ability to adapt as a society; there will be no new ways of doing things or dealing…

#78Does anyone have any information on how Scruff handles that information? Also, does HIPAA say anything about technology companies outside of the medical field's data that may voluntarily collect HIV status?
> Also, does HIPAA say anything about technology companies outside of the medical field's data that may voluntarily collect HIV status? No, HIPAA binds only covered entities, which are (basically) care providers, insurers, and certain other parties in certain business relationships with care providers and insurers. If you give out your health information to a dating service, it's not protected by HIPAA.
Covered entities are specifically defined as: "(1) A health plan"; "(2) A health care clearinghouse"; or "(3) A health care provider who transmits any health information in electronic form in connection with a transaction covered by this subchapter" [1].

Those laws apply to healthcare providers, not to social networks.
Well, in the case of PA (as an example) i believe they have a `Subsequent disclosure prohibited` portion of their statute which covers anyone who has the data preventing them from further sharing it without consent.
Its also available to anyone who sees the profile in their search results. As far as I can tell you cant have a profile that is active, use it and not show up in search results.
