Yeah it doesn't help that a lot of programmers are traditionally "nerds" who have grown up being bullied by others (I did). It is possible to understand how to handle this kind of behaviors though. If people were all nice, then it wouldn't be a problem. But there are far too many opportunistic jerks out there to not worry about exposing your vulnerabilities.
