I'm the only person on my team with American citizenship, but my teammates are all so talented. And nice. It makes me sad to think about the stress and insecurity these changes could cause them.

I wonder if current immigration rules don't cause any stress to your team members. Just because they don't talk about it, doesn't mean they are not stressing about it.

If any of them are from India/China and they understand what's really happening with the immigration policies in the US, they'll probably love these upcoming changes (related to merit based immigration)

I agree on many of the points you made. This is the reason h1b needs to be abolished and replaced with a high skilled immigration system like Canada's. it'll give true mobility for the immigrant and less power to the company to abuse, which would in turn lead to less or no wage disparity among immigrants and citizens of US.

Majority in IT are from India and China, getting degrees in US universities.

But high skilled merit based immigration helps industries that are not in the IT field.

You should be happy about any US anti-immigrant policies. It'll stop some brain drain from everywhere else :)

Non-American businesses and corporations which depend on intelligent manpower should be more worried because of the proposed changes, not less. The entire point of immigration reform is to make it merit-based i.e. the most promising candidates would be prioritized.

The republicans carry most of the south these days. I guess this means the confederacy was strongly pro-Lincoln? Presumably the whole civil war thing was fake news?

I suspect the old system was designed to keep people of color out of the States. The United States was predominately white Christian, so people related to Americans were mostly white Christians. However today the people most likely to bring their families over are "brown" people who immigrated on merit or as refugees or who got lucky, so now it's time to close that loophole.

While that is indeed a big reason for the current family based immigration system, I think there are strong arguments to be made for a merit based immigration system. Some people may support it for the wrong reasons but that doesn't mean that such a policy wouldn't be good long term for the country.
