It's unlikely Snowden will ever get a pardon. Functional governments have a vested interest in not forgiving blatant disregard for their laws, regardless of the morality of the acts that led to the disregard. I agree. And I doubt his fate is going to get any better in the future, unfortunately.

Clemency would mean that she was pardoned, yes? But she was merely released early on a commuted sentence.

A better, almost perfect analogy, is its a religious belief.

Even more accurately its a religious belief where its sole purpose is to state group allegiance and declare one's holiness.

Kind of like the right has global warming denialism, the left has transgender. The purpose of the talking point is to declare allegiance to a political group in public and count coup against those less politically fashionable. As such any declaration of disagreement benefits the believer, especially when the discussion happens in an echo chamber of true believers. "Its merely a test of faith" "I'm a better believer than you" "He's just a sinner going to hell" etc.

Fundamentally the whole mind-virus can be blamed on Protestantism. When the priest (Catholic or, frankly, Pagan or most other religions) was the arbiter of holiness granted by authority, things were stable. Once holiness was granted to anyone in the general public willing to declare themselves holier than thou, that toxic mind-virus spread out of religion and into everything from climate to sexuality and gender. Generally speaking holiness is a weapon and if it slips out of control into anarchy a civilization is doomed to collapse.
