Sadly it's a quirk of human nature that we get more defensive over our things when work gets tough. It tends to push us to more neoliberal policies. If work gets hard to find; Gen Z and the baby boomer generation would rather keep millennials renting, as opposed to massive social spending. Unless there's a massive shift towards the left we'll only see widening inequality due to the insurgence of AI on the job market. This is more of a cynical outlook, but in the last three decades in politics across the globe there's been no progressive popular movements.

I'm not talking about reducing fossil fuels, but perhaps coming up with solutions with their resources that addresses a world that isn't so habitable by life in the future. My point was more around addressing global warming from the perspective of mitigation rather than prevention. There seems to be a lot of reports that indicate our opportunity for preventing global warming has passed or will soon pass[0][1][2]. So if that's the case, it seems like it would be pretty important to work on solutions to survive the effects of global warming instead.

Bizarrely, humans weren't used for computation in the Matrix. They were batteries...somehow.
There's the one camp that decries how this flies in the face of basic thermodynamics (human body temperature vs. ambient gives abysmally low Carnot efficiency), and the other camp that claims thermodynamics is just invented by the machines to make stuff work inside the Matrix.

On the other hand, it might be easier to get people to care about catastrophic climate change if it goes from "I'll be dead by the time thats an issue" to "I'll be alive to watch my great grandchildren's homes get swallowed by the sea".

On the third hand, it might be easier just to upgrade your immortal body to survive in low oxygen environment.

Because the solutions to these problems are unconscionable to tech nerds, whose entire life style is dependent on the happy belly of Western resource and energy profligacy. The solutions involve powerdown, a rollback of technological progress and refocus on survival and sustainability at a global scale, and quite possibly a significant reduction of the human population.
I'm fairly sure that more than just "tech nerds" are against large scale democide, especially when the alternatives are pretty reasonable (bike lanes and wind power, the horror!)
