#492But saying that one OS is better than another because it takes 5s to 'boot' instead of 10s is bikeshedding. (windows cheats here anyway, because it shows you the desktop before it's ready to be interacted with)

Where are you going?
Torn between Windows and Linux at the moment. I know Elementary's file manager has Miller columns, but it's a pain to get it on Fedora, which I prefer over Debian-based distros. For Windows I have no idea.
How has your experience with Elementary been?
I've been thinking of getting a MacBook for my mom in a few months. In the meantime, I had to reinstall her linux laptop, so I thought I'd give her Elementary because I heard good things about it, and from the screenshots I figured it would be like halfway between linux and mac, so might ease the transition a little.
But in the end, I got so frustrated with it I switched it back to Xubuntu!

If they included a breakable USB cable, most people would have been happy. For some reason they didn't.
If they actually enforced their cords so they didn't fray and fall apart within 6 months, I would be happy. Their stubbornness to correct the cord situation is exasperating.

First, there's nothing "toy: about Swift. It's a full featured language on par with Rust, Go, etc. That's some amazing CoolAid you've got there. But I'll grant you that it's on the same level with a bunch of other new languages that also aren't in general use for serious long term products yet. But until Intel delivers boards that accept 32GB low-power RAM of the kind that goes into Apple laptops, we're not gonna get…
You want Apple to make their own CPUs?

There's a lot to not like about Windows's UI, but Explorer is worlds better than Finder, there's absolutely no comparison. Every day I still struggle to remember how to go up a level. Option+Up? Nope that selects the next folder up. Control+Up? No, that made all of my windows do something weird that I don't know what that is. Ah, it's Command+Up. As far as I can tell, there's no non-keyboard way to do it. I can't cli…
I've learned to right-click the title on the toolbar, which shows a dropdown of folders above the current one, which you can select to go up.

#497I used to be hardcore windows guy... Then 10 years ago I got a mac. I never went back.. But what am I saving money for right now? To build a nice PC again. Mostly because of the exact reasons in the article. I have a fondness for apple... but they have definitely lost their way. First, they were a computer company driven by a man who loved computers ("first" here is the Jobs return era) ... then they became a Compute…
Apple is a still computer company, because Phones ARE computers. For the majority of the population in developed countries, and almost all of the population of developing countries, smartphones are the only computer people have or need. I agree that Apple have shifted focus away from "making tools for people to create things and solve problems" towards consumption-oriented mobile devices. But those devices are still…
But what does that have to do with me (or, it seems, the GP poster)?
I want a great computer on which I can do what I usually do on my computer which is mostly programming, but I guess I could be fancy and say "content creation" instead.
The fact that phones are computers have exactly zero relevance when it comes to me choosing a new laptop.
I used to be a hardcore Mac user, because the computing environment was superior to any other choice, but that's not the case anymore so my next computer will be a Linux laptop.

Yes I know, but anyone that needs to do heavy graphics work hasn't been Apple's target market for a long time. That really started to show when they switched to only offering a discrete GPU on the most expensive 15inch MBP. In general I feel that no one (for now) can touch Apple in the laptop market, although half of the reason is macOS working so damn well on MacBooks. But other companies have other markets on lockd…
And yet they were first to market with 5K, and although not exclusive, make a point of citing color management as a priority in displays and software.

> None of these things are universal among Windows machines. I can't remember which model, but a Verge review recently said that a Windows laptop had surpassed the best Mac (in terms of hardware quality). Doubtful. Apple does crazy stuff like custom ACPI for Thunderbolt controllers so they can be very efficient. Or having each of the fins on a fan be at a different angle so they have a different pitch and fan noise i…
> Final Cut Pro works fine (read: smooth) on the anemic Macbook 2016 Yeah, my girlfriend's MacBook would beg to differ, as it stutters on a couple of heavy websites in Safari tabs.
even 4k is workable, although not quite as smooth.
Desktop Safari is also notorious for not being as smooth and fast as other browser because its primarily built for (battery) efficiency, not performance.

I too have become annoyed recently at really basic stuff not working in macOS, like I can't drag and drop a picture out of Photos app into Pixelmator to edit. In fact, dragging and dropping a picture out of Photos into any application is completely broken and doesn't work. Its as-if the Apple QA team no longer tests to make sure their applications play nice with each other in a way that has been fundamental to deskto…
