If Apple just stopped doing those things, I'd consider running OSX, but they won't so it seems like an entirely pointless exercise.
It's the same iOS vs Android debate, Apple charge a premium but promise things will be significantly better, if they are only marginally better then it becomes harder to justify their premium and lock in.
I think the recent spate of articles are more about the fact that the gap has been narrowing significantly, partly due to Apple's neglect, partly due to Microsoft doing better, so the balance is changing for people on the margins.
