Self-driving taxis are the future. Far less waste when the vehicle isn't lying around all day taking up space and doing nothing.

I'd like to see a self-driving car navigate London's narrow streets with cars both sides and the negotiation that goes on between drivers about who goes first. I'm impressed with this self-driving on California's spacious streets in perfect weather. Maybe it will have technology (GPS, Live Traffic, Cameras) to not go on that street until it is good to do so.

Once autonomous cars are ubiquitous, it should be possible to increase speed limits substantially above where they are now, since the autonomous cars will have instantaneous reaction times.

You won't. Uber is a bit ahead of the game with the whole "Order a car" system, but car manufacturers should by now have realized that they need to be a tech and service company and not just a "goods" supplier.
Hyper-exotics like Ferrari or Aston Martin can rely on driving enthusiasts to keep their brand alive, the others have to get self-driving tech and think about building an Uber-esque service. I can imagine Uber has a strong position of being able to sell their software/service to the manufacturers (the "Get a ride in a Mercedes" app will be the Uber app with Mercedes-branding, and it will run with Uber's servers), for a, say 5%, cut!

#529Police departments around the country are going to see a loss of revenue. No more rolling through stop signs, illegal lane changes, or speeding tickets.
Funny point! I wonder if they'll add some "police funding tax" to self-driving car sales to make up for this revenue stream, the same way many politicians want a tax to electric vehicles to make up for the revenue lost to the gas tax.
(Note: I don't really wonder this, because cops do not officially make stops in order to generate revenue, even though unofficially it's widely understood that they do.)

#530So, lets be clear then, you do not truly own the car. Am reminded of ebook and movie purchases - you're only just licensing the item. You own next to nothing.
Not having to own a car, maintain it, repair it, etc is a feature, not a bug. I'd far rather have a pay-for-use car (ie. a driverless taxi).
