Could you share with us what the state of art in SLAM is ? Last I looked, the backend is essentially the same old Kalman-smoother, but the frontend is generally used with hand-tuned features (stuff from the 90s - 00s). Big Data, incl. all the rapid advance in object-recognition CNNs can't really seem to do much in this case; unless there are radical new techniques that I'm not aware of.
I'd advise others on this thread, who tend to dismiss the difficulty of vision, to realize that techniques in ML and Deep-learning are very problem specific and not the holy grail of AGI they're made out to be.
