Another proprietary filesystem? I was really hoping they'd adopt ZFS fully.
ZFS on OSX was doomed the moment Oracle bought Sun. If you want to know why, just contemplate the smoking wreckage of the Oracle/Google Java API lawsuit.
Oracle's beef with Google comes from actions that occurred before Java was open sourced.
It's hard to see how the two scenarios are even remotely related, other than "Oracle"

Apple says they intend to open-source the file system in the docs. Open Source : "An open source implementation is not available at this time. Apple plans to document and publish the APFS volume format when Apple File System is released in 2017."

Just like they promised to open source FaceTime and iMessages? Apple has a history of making false promises in regards to open sourcing products.

No snapshotting yet, can't boot, no migration tools for existing setups (time machine, filevault, fusion). It'd be interesting to see whether their permission changes introduced in 10.11 will travel further down the fs. Also, I don't see any mention of compression like lz4. Lots of work until release in 2017!

Shipping in 2017? So it won't even be ready for Sierra?
It's present as a developer preview in Sierra, but isn't the default filesystem and can't be used as the boot drive. Which is probably how it should be. I'd rather not lose data to a new filesystem because Apple rushed the thing out without proper testing.
