I am not seeing the information about encryption they mention in any of my chat details on the iOS client. Is this part Android only or did simply non of my contacts upgrade yet? I have version 2.16.1

edit: After a while it now shows up with certain contacts for me

    This includes chats, group chats, attachments, voice notes, and voice calls across Android, iPhone, Windows Phone, Nokia S40, Nokia S60, Blackberry, and BB10.

    Users running the most recent versions of WhatsApp on any platform now get full end to end encryption for every message they send and every WhatsApp call they make when communicating with each other.
It likely requires both ends to have the latest version before e2ee is enabled.

I should use this as a strong argument for the rest of my no-please-not-another-instant-messenger-i-stay-with-whatsapp-contacts:

When whatsapp is implementing the signal protocol, why should one use whatsapp in the first place?[1]

I hope this good advertisement gives signal another round of traction.

[1] Ok, you've got me. The less techie contacts will swing the feature-bat and the other already use signal.

This is the first question that came to my mind. What about the signal apps? I've been trying to get everyone in my vicinity to migrate from whatsapp to signal. It would be more than neat, if I could choose to use signal, while still being able to talk to whatsapp users.

According to their blog post, it's available on a plethora of platforms

I haven't seen the notification either, yet, though.

WhatsApp have published further details for users[1], as well as a technical whitepaper[2] explaining the implementation. There's also a blog post[3].

I imagine all of the end-points in the conversation, including you, your friends, and any bots or loggers (I don't know how these things work) will need to be able to handle end to end encryption before they switch or I'd imagine those who are left out will just see a bunch of garbage.
