the steam frame is apparently 440 grams.

The display part is 185g and headstrap adds 245g, which has headphones and battery at the back. Seems like it's well balanced, but might be too heavy. If it's comfortable it will be the first ever decent VR device. Assuming that they've implemented eye-tracking based UI like Vision Pro, and I don't have to shoot tiny targets to click, which is hilariously bad UI.

Assuming that the Steam Frame isn't accompanied by a complete change to the current SteamVR experience that hasn't been so much as hinted at, alas, no, SteamVR is full of tiny targets to shoot. I've only ever used the Meta Quest 3S' native UI but the smallest targets there are generally significantly bigger than the smallest targets in the SteamVR UI. On the plus side, once you activate some of those small targets you can do some cursor navigation like a conventional UI, and having that option is a breath of fresh air... but it's completely inconsistent. You experience it as a bonus when it's available because it's not even consistent enough to "miss it when it is gone", let alone for it to be a consistent navigation method.

We may get the obvious eye-tracking upgrade but the targets are still pretty small, it's going to need to be very accurate.

Just switching the input method from shooting to eye-control would be fine for me, if it's accurate enough. Clicks can be made from the controller.

Stopped using it after about a week or two of usage. The only interesting use case was screen mirroring from my Mac, but that wasn't compelling enough to endure the weight of it on my face. I expected watching a movie would be a good use case, but in reality the brightness of the screen would reflect (I guess?) off my face and create a glare... so it ultimately wasn't a good movie device. Gave it to a friend who was…

Wow, if you can't get a buddy to use it for free... this really is not the same league as the iPhone.

I wouldn't use an iPhone if somebody gave me one for free.

Yep. The lack of a video input killed the thing for me, and, I suspect, thousands of other people. All it needed was a USB-C jack for power and video over DisplayPort. This could have been a great device for gamers, 3-D modelers, drone pilots, cinematographers... but Apple's fear of I/O ruined it.

The problem is if the power cable comes out the machine cuts off and you are in complete darkness. Having a locking cable makes a lot of sense.

Not sure if that was intended to reply to my comment, but I never objected to having a locking cable.

I use it every day, approx ~95% of the days since it launched over 2 years ago. Many hours a day. Far and away my biggest use-case is connecting it to my laptop for gigantic (private) movie theater-sized screen. Getting it comfortable was the most important step. The 6-months-old DualKnit band is really great for making it a lot more comfortable. An open face mod (eg $10 Macally on amazon) helps a lot with eye breath…

For others curious about the open face mod, apparently it's this:

For $3500 you could buy yourself an 85" - 98" 4k screen instead.

Where do I get the living room to match,

and can I put both into your plane seat if I’m next to you? =]

What's the text clarity equivalent to? 27" 1080p monitor?

Yeah that's probably a good estimation. To me the clarity is fine. I definitely recommend trying one before buying though to make sure you'd be happy with it.

Thanks! I tried the demo when I went to Sydney (we don't have Apple Stores in NZ, sadly), and was blown away by the demo. Unfortunately they couldn't show me a demo of the virtual display.

I recently just picked up a used, like new, M5 Vision Pro for a steal. I've had it for a month and use it a few times a week, mostly for content consumption but very occasionally when I need to work, want a bigger screen, and don't want to sit at my desk.

If you don’t mind answering, where did you get it?

You can occasionally find great deals on Facebook marketplace which is where I found mine. It can be a bit stressful to give someone off the street a couple grand in cash and assume the risk but in my case, we were able to meet at an Apple Store, I was able to evaluate the unit and it was new enough that it had the original box and packaging along with that new Apple smell.

Swappa’s another place I’ve had decent success for used Apple products but like any market, it’s often a matter timing and luck.

Not regularly, but I do watch movies on it once in a while (in those beautiful environments), especially when I'm on a flight. WWDC also just rolled out some quite exciting features to RealityKit: https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2026/279/ as well as visionOS itself ( https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2026/287/ ) It makes me wonder if Apple is really giving it up as news have claimed.

What are the logistics of wearing this on a flight? It seems like it would take up a majority of your personal item space. As someone who only packs a personal item for most flights, that’s a hard sell. Can you reliably plug it in? It seems like the battery doesn’t last long enough for a long haul flight, and for shorter flights where the battery would hold up, the bulk doesn’t seem worth it. Of course, on the long f…

At the end of the day, it only makes sense if watching a movie on AVP gives you immense joy, which is the case for me.

If you can charge your phone, you can charge your vision pro. The battery itself can last any movie with no problem.
