This was to patch an active exploit, but it highlights the difference between Apple and Android OEMs: once they've sold you a phone Android OEMs have no vested interest to ensure you receive updates because all of the services and revenue goes to Google.

Apple does have this incentive because at a minimum you're probably paying for iCloud storage and probably some other stuff too, which falls into the highest-margin revenue Apple has.
