Our launch got <20 visits from 3 marketplaces. Is there a better way to grow?

Hey folks,

I wanted to share some honest reflections from our recent launch experience and hopefully learn from others who’ve gone through the same.

We recently launched ConversionWax, a tool that helps ecom and SaaS brands personalize on-site content based on geo, traffic source, or intent (e.g., showing the right homepage banner to someone from LA vs. London, or tailoring CTAs for affiliate traffic).

To build early momentum, we listed on a few smaller marketplaces:

- MicroLaunch

- Fraizer

- InsanelyCoolTools

They looked promising initially, but after 3+ weeks, we got fewer than 20 visits combined. No engagement. No conversions. Just… silence.

Then we launched on Product Hunt.

The traffic bump was better, but it quickly became clear that visibility mostly goes to those who spend on promotion or already have large audiences. I’m not blaming the system, but as a small bootstrapped team looking to connect with real users, it’s been more challenging than we expected.

We built a tool that improves conversion rates, but ironically, getting in front of people without already being "in the loop" feels harder than ever.

So here’s my question for the community:

How have you actually found and attracted early users, especially affiliates, creators, or marketers, without spending big or relying on launch platforms?

I would love to hear what worked for you, such as affiliate platforms, cold outreach, community building, or anything else.

Thanks in advance — and happy to share what we’re learning in return

Never heard of any of those marketplaces, not surprised at all you got no response.

Marketing is hard. It takes about 100x the effort that you think.

There are a lot of things that can work. For one thing you could count on spending more promoting your service than you spent developing it. That takes elbow grease to know you're not wasting your money.

If you want to put in effort but not money there are a large number of things that work such as, say, prospecting people on LinkedIn who are likely candidates and "cold outreach" them, but a good "cold outreach" is pretty warm because you have them well qualified. Running a blog that has really interesting content is another option. There also is the possibility of doing something really crazy like

Myself I think "free" plans are for the birds, they cost a lot in terms of developer, marketing, sales and support headspace but don't convert well. Usually when I sign up for a "free" plan I never put much effort into evaluating the product because I have to multiply that effort by the expectation that the odds are 1/4 that I will want it, 1/4 that my employer will pay for it and such.

Thanks for the response. I agree this is going to be about 100x harder than we thought it would be.

That article was pretty good. This is the outside-of-the-box thinking we are now looking at. Something, anything to break through the noise.
