I recall that PG started it because he was writing essays, and doing talks, and students at the talk were asking him for more advice.

And then another point where he figured that angels were getting a pretty damn big cut, because one of the angels who invested in his company got an excellent ROI.

And the first YC batch was outstandingly good.
