What do you expect from a Movie / Show Recommendations app?

I'm currently working on a Movie Recommendation app and I don't wanna build on something that is generic and takes some likes and dislikes of users and show movies in that particular genre.

We might like a wide spectrum of movies based on the plot (or anything) of the movies so, if you guys could tell me what do you expect from a movie recommendations app it would be helping me a lot.

Honestly, something more than just 'if you like this then try [result+genre+rating] - maybe have a questionairre for each movie you put in your 'liked' category that creates a more complex matrix of potential like films

I'd question that such a thing is necessary. The number of movies and TV shows that I'd like to watch outpaces my ability to watch them by an order of magnitude.

You know what I miss? Serendipity.

When I browsed VHS tape jackets looking at the key art, logline/synopsis and the cast, I had this nice feeling of discovering screen gems, serendipitously.

Now, I am tired of recommender algos that just try to predict my taste and taking out serendipity out of the equation. So, if you are building a recommender app, build an "I am feeling lucky" option.
