#3Err, they follow the money. Put the money somewhere else and (young) workers will go to wherever it moves to. Today, it's ads and tracking. In the 60's, it might have been engineering - but there was no social networking alternatives so the judgement is biased to a degree.

Maybe the government needs to limit the amount of money going i to ads/tracking by enforcing data privacy and banning certain practices like fingerprinting users and stalking them around the web.

Then you'll get all sorts of people pissing and moaning that the government is involving itself into business, blah blah blah. The EU is trying to do this to some degree and the Tech companies (of course) hate this.
And the govt probably loves the collection efforts as a single subpoena can gather a whole lot of data with little effort. Big Brother asked to appear.
