Am I the only person who finds it irritating when people address a group with generalisations that ignore the diversity of individual situations within that group? Is it true that “diversity matters” if one is ignoring that diversity?

For example:

I drop our son at school almost every school day, and have been doing so for the last few years-and when our daughter starts school next year, I’ll probably do the same for her (even now, some mornings I drop her at preschool). I’m also the primary supervisor of getting our son up and ready each school morning. Mostly my wife does pick-up, but I’ve done it plenty of times. And although it is more mothers, I’m not the only father there for either.

Currently, his extracurricular activities are music and swimming lessons, and I take him to both of them. I also take him to all his medical and psychologist appointments. And I have a full-time job, while my wife is not in paid employment.

I feel like nothing in this blog post has any relevance to our family’s situation-nor that of a number of other families I know.

No doubt I couldn't be as actively involved in our children’s lives if I worked for a Musk-run company, due to their inflexibility around work-life balance-but I couldn’t accept a position with such a company anyway. In a competitive job market, outlier employers can get away with offering conditions under which closer-to-the-median employers would severely struggle to attract talent.
