#2Your network can be compromised if the device is connected to the same network as other devices. However, most modern routers support a guest WiFi, which may be a good fit here.
In the previous company I worked for we provided alternative laptops when traveled to China, as it is enough to connect to a hot spot to get infected.
With that said, if your father in law has other devices, worth connecting them to the guest network as well.

Most modern routes also routinely live various security holes, I wouldn't trust the built-in Guest WiFi functionality at all.
Better yet, run a separate network device and VLAN for untrusted devices.
