What do you think are the main engineer's expectations from the CTO?

Context: I am a first-time CTO and have literally jumped out of the airplane and trying to build my parachute on the way to the ground. Expect me to ask silly questions.

What do you think are the main engineer's expectations from the CTO? How do you manage the expectations?

I'm an engineer at a small startup, and I work directly with the CTO most of the time. This is his only job so far. I keep my expectations low and let him save face.

Defend and represent technical excellence. A lot of orgs don't understand how bad it is to cut corners and to ignore technical debt, and if the CTO doesn't consistently advocate for doing things the right way, that'll be a drain on the org long term, and will hurt the morale of your engineers. Stay away from meaningless, and potentially destructive, metrics. Read the book Accelerate if you haven't yet. See your where team lands compared to elite teams out there, and then give the team the time and support to improve.
