By "solve problems" you mean "temporarily mitigate problems by throwing money at them", right? Or do you actually have specific examples of problems that can be permanently solved and aren't already being tackled?

Fusion research has had less than than tenth of this investment, but a viable fusion reactor would have far more impact than a tenth of what Stargate will likely deliver.

Not to mention efforts for mitigating climate change and ecological collapse. But of course those issues reside outside our economic system, so why would anyone invest in them.

Ditto. My non-tech friends ask what benefit AI has to society and I struggle to give them concrete examples that outweigh the opportunity cost of this kind of investment in more meaningful endeavors. Let alone the downsides of an algorithmically-driven society and the increasing environmental costs of AI workloads.

The problem with allowing student debt to rack up to these levels and then cancelling it is that it would embolden universities to ask even higher tuition. A second problem is that not all students get the benefit, some already paid off their debts or a large part of it. It would be unfair to them.

Simple ten years of tax deductions for paid student loans. Fixed it.

What is the evidence for 1) ? I thought that the latest models were getting "somewhere" with fairly trivial reasoning tests like ARC-1

It may be that you can just find the solution for these tests by interpolating from a very large dataset.
