The US Government looooves to overreach where its not wanted. As someone in cybersecurity Fable was absolutely utterly useless. I would be shocked if there is any credibility behind this 'vulnerability'. It seems Anthropic agrees.

Yeah! I also think that the ban was unintended. I also think that’s a big clown show. People think that LLMs accidentally get good with security patterns. That is not the case, they included all of that in the training data. They could also have left out the knowledge.

Still, it saves them the burden of actually providing the model that's too expensive for them to provide. They can now brag they have the best model at zero cost to them. And without people poking it and finding its limitations (the real ones, not externally imposed ones).

#984It's wild to me how we can have a whole conversation about this and just completely sidestep how incredibly racist this directive is, just how much it ties into the Trump administration's ongoing campaign of kidnapping melanated people. This is the same administration that denied one of the top FIFA refs a visa because they're Somali asking an AI company to gatekeep access to their on citizenship at a time when they're in the middle of attempting to challenge birthright citizenship and ramping up attempts to revoke naturalized citizenship to an unprecedented rate. Here they are attempting to throw "AI safety policy" into the same cursed pot and we're just head in the sand about that part

This is the same administration that's in the middle of trying ramp up revocation of natural citizenship, that's kidnapping huge numbers of melanated families in a viscerally cruel way, that's set on repealing birthright citizenship, that wants to use proof of citizenship as a voting suppression tactic all while making it more and more dangerous to register that proof in the first place. They want to throw AI safety into the same cursed pot of bullshit?
Props to Anthropic for refusing. OpenAI already has the mechanism in place since years ago. Let's see if they comply.

I think ultimately this is an attack on open computing, the idea that people should own computing devices and run whatever software in them.
That's because if things keep advancing at this pace, in a couple of years, we will probably have Mythos-level, open weights models running on consumer or prosumer GPUs. Even if it takes a decade, that's no time in the grand scheme of things. And when the time comes, what will government do?
They will probably regulate who can buy GPUs and other tech that can run powerful AI, and what are people allowed to do with them. Probably using trusted computing and remote attestation and so on.

My gut reaction was that it does look like a PR stunt. But indeed it might also be a blunder caused by all of their other PR stunts. "Our new stuff is soooo dangerous!!", followed by "The US government believed us and acted accordingly".
Granted that Claude's whole marketing strategy has been fear mongering this is a win win situation for them tbh.
