that link says that "always allow" doesn't exist (needs to be reinstated)

Android does the same if anyone's wondering

Android has a (functioning?) always allow setting.

You can buy complete bluetooth beacons including battery for under $7 in the EU. They can easily be built for a few bucks. Good profits, and I expect many people will have 5-10 devices, because they're so cheap

I played with some BLE beacons a few years back. I honestly didn't find them very useful for finding things--though that was probably some older Bluetooth version.

The trick is of course the locating network, and UHF, but it's essentially the same hardware

Awesome! Not released yet, unfortunately, but this is exactly the thing! If they can do it, maybe that means that Apple intends to open up the API, which means I can do my Raspberry PI button to get things working.

It is released, I tried it last week. (currently needs their app installed, not sure if it will work without soon)

It was less bitter than I expected. Closer to arugula than Fernet.

Its private from 3rd parties, but not private from apple and whoever subpoenas them. Apply this principle to everything apple does and says about privacy and you see it everywhere in their products. Even more cynically, you can say it's private from their competitors.

Just imagine the sheer amount of non recyclable plastic this "design choice" by Apple to offer an un-holed product will generate. This world has a major problem.

I don't see this ever being relevant on the scale of plastic pollution; people will buy a few and use them for years. For example, is the world being overwhelmed with smartphone cases?

No, why would it be? It requires Apple devices to detect and Apple's servers to coordinate the data.

This will reduce the power of Tile's finding network which will make it less effective for Android users. Why would they? To not be evil. They need to be stopped.

Not all Tile products offer/offered battery replacement.

Well, there's a difference between "don't allow for battery replacement" and "not all Tile products offer battery replacement".

Anyone who is "bothered by this", would buy the ones that have replaceable batteries like I did.
