I define bias as not treating all political and philosophical opinions equally. If one is picked over the others, that is bias. I saw this bias and made many records of it in case of ChatGPT.

Google currently handles 100,000 queries per second. The costs to run GLM-130B or GPT-3 at this rate would be astonishingly high.

Would they? An array of a million of these machines would cost $4 billion at consumer retail prices. That's 1.4% of Google's annual revenue for one-off bulk cost. The operational cost, at consumer retail electric using current inflated levels, was a small fraction of a cent per query. This is ignoring economy of scale, better electric pricing, caching, etc.

That sort of thing always felt meaningless to me. Sure I could carve my name or a blog post into a cave wall… so what. “Some small part” of me doesn’t live on. Even some small part of Aristotle or Cleopatra doesn’t live on. Ideas and stories live, but people die. The death of personality is currently total and final. I don’t know why Billionaires don’t invest their entire fortunes into research on reversing this.

I think relatively few people share this kind of existential dread. It actually has never crossed my mind personally.

If I think 500 years into the future, what would be great is if my descendants are ample and thriving, and my values are upheld. That feels like such a win to me. The fact that I won't physically be there is irrelevant.

On the other hand, artificial continuation of an otherwise impact-less life sounds awful to me.

I suspect that billionaires (certainly, the 2 that I have some insight into having worked for them) think much more about impact they are creating, than some sort of "hang on forever like a barnacle" type of existence.

to clarify -- Microsoft invested $1bn in 2019, half of which was Azure credits. The other half is cash. Since then, they invested a further $2bn.

And META reportedly has spent billions on the meta-verse. It's kind of interesting that language models are now making meta-tech look outdated.

I asked google "is cancer a metabolic disease" and it confidently said it was. I asked it "is cancer a genetic disease" and it confidently said it was. These are completely opposite theories of cancer.

Missing the point of positioning by miles. I’m sure Google will release something good, but it will be called: Google’s ChatGPT. Should have made something to distinguish their AI solutions from just being a copy to trendy solution. Saying AI will be used in search is not news, AI is already part of Google search.

Tying it back to search at all is completely missing the point imo. They need to realize people want answers and information - they don’t want to look for answers and information. From a a marketing perspective, it sure seems like Google has already missed the ball on this one. Not that they can do anything about it, though, since their cash cow is search results. They need people to look, not find, and chatgpt helps people find.

I was able to see LaMDA in action about 1.5 years ago. It was just as awe-inducing as ChatGPT. Google is not behind in this race. They're simply slower to roll out new functionality. And maybe rightly so? Some of the things I saw ChatGPT say would have been multi-day international bad headlines for Google, if a Google AI had said them instead of an upstart startup.

I've seen this exact comment at least 3 times in this post... what's up Google, getting nervous?

ChatGPT just saves us the inconvenience of skimming through the websites in the first page of Google Search. We have become even lazier. We just want to type in our thoughts and get an answer in seconds. Now, if Google does a ChatGPT-like experience in the Search, then I'd probably come back to Google. I won't mind the ads.
