I have an iPhone SE, and social signaling has literally not cross my mind at any point when deciding for it. It has the perfect size and form factor, I know it will be supported for at minimum 5y, and the cost is perfectly reasonable. That’s pretty much the only things I care about. It also has a fingerprint reader, and none of your reasons are things I do care about. I think I pay 2.99€ for monthly storage? Which is fine, that’s low enough that I couldn’t care less if that’s cheaper somewhere else

So, that’s a data point if you want to consider others perspective

Except the OS decides at random times to switch back so you end up having to use a keyboard you're not used to. I get why. I don't agree with that why.

HN can be as critical as they want of Apple's design changes. Until they vote with their wallets (they won't, because most people here are ideologically tied to Apple) no one inside Apple cares.

I was "ideologically tied" to using products created by people who clearly cared more about creating them and my experience using them than their competitors. That era seems to have finally passed.

If this phone dies before they right the ship, I'll be looking around for the first time in almost 20 years.

Come on, the 6th word after 5 English words is obviously going to be a rare word in your second keyboard language, not another common English word.

On top this my own language is Englishifying so it’s understandable it gets confused. But still, the whole thing is infuriating when you type something correct and boom, it becomes a word in another language.

The advantage of software is the 'soft' part i.e. it's much easier to change than hardware.

Unless physical keyboards had mini displays for every key, they're a good design given the 'physical' limitation of their design.

A touchscreen displays 'soft'ware that's easy to change and make smarter than physical items.

they are not bastion of good design. they are the bastion of intentional opinionated design. Meaning they don't listen to feedback. ("we don't have focus groups" - Steve Jobs).

Looking at every UI/UX implementation around be and on my devices... I'm not sure anyone does anymore. Not in a haha way, I actually see so many trivial issues all around, I don't understand how they passed any contact with testing and user feedback.

This was not poor design, but a decision to restrict the user from copy pasting entire articles and the like. Most unfair and this iPhone 3G to iPhone 17 Pro user is seriously considering ditching them over select all
