I own an Efoil, and probably the chief topic of discussion among other Efoil owners is how far we can push our (lithium ion) batteries and what we have to do to achieve that.

My personal best is 17 miles, but I can only do that if I ride a certain way and have my board configured in a certain way.

As the battery level dips, it gets increasingly difficult to stay foiling or to restart.

And no brand, none of them actually live up to their marketed ride times because it's so highly variate.

I get the need for alternative fuel sources, but I really don't want to have to figure these dynamics out in an automobile and am staying away from full electric cars for now.

They use the official process. Sue the EPA.

Sort of. The official process comes in a couple different flavors, and there are absolutely ways to game it. It's not like EPA is running the tests themselves, they just write the rules. Also, AFAICT there is no penalty for sandbagging (see also Porsche). Tesla could give realistic numbers but instead ran the tests in the most optimistic way possible and chose the best numbers they could plausibly claim to be EPA for…

The VW method!

I have a model Y. I hate almost everything about it. But most germane, The "Battery meter" at the top of the display is total bunk. That's got to be "rosy" numbers. It'll display a the battery in miles, but it's at least 25% inflated. However if you punch in a destination, you'll get exact numbers, and those are insanely reliable. It claims (and I don't believe any claims coming from tesla) that it'll factor wind, el…

If I hate something I would try to sell it immediately. Did you sell it?

Otherwise it looks to me that your rant is just for karma collecting.

I drove a Tesla for over a month and it was a relief to go back to my Honda Civic. The range (both miles and %) was wildly inaccurate. If I had to drive anywhere that wasn’t a few miles within the city, I was under constant anxiety. No thank you. It’s a wonder to me that anyone would ever trust anything Elon Musk ever says about anything. He’s a proven liar and creates an openly hostile, negative culture wherever he…

I can’t credit myself with the observation, it was someone else on HN, but it ran something like this: For years Tesla made cars that were disproportionately appealing to people with concerns about the environment, a population that skews liberal/progressive. Those on the other side of the political world view might like the cars too- especially technophiles— but there certainly a large contingent that are skeptical…

You can see his conversations leaked by court docs and understand his politics clearly. No need to contort yourself into seeing him in some other light than the one that’s readily apparent

As a Tesla owner, I think the source of the confusion is the EPA range displayed in the HUD on the Tesla. We toggled ours to show the battery percentage, which is much more useful to us. We've never owned a gas vehicle that met it's EPA range and the Tesla is no different. No one takes EPA MPG * GALLONS of gas and expects it to be a real life estimate of range. Wind resistance increases EXPONENTIALLY with speed. Driv…

Car and Driver's EPA range versus real world highway tests:

EVs are quite different to ICE when it comes to EPA range ratings.

If you tell it where you're going it will.

Doesn’t it know where it is ? This goes to the optimistic/ exagerated calculation

It knows where it is. It can’t very well know which direction you want to go if you don’t tell it, can it.

I disagree. Because we seldom have the same car twice, I always need to decipher some strange icons to find out what something does. Or how to operate the wipers. It might work better if you know it b/c of tactile feedback, but it's in no way intuitive.

The icons problem isn't any different now, but now the icons are hidden in different sub menus. All that without the benefit of tactile feedback of knobs and switches.

There is no icon but a text, "Turn AC on"

Seems like it’s common across all EVs for the range to be inflated by around 20%, at least for freeway driving. In a recent review, a Tesla did a slightly better job than most of the cars tested, as far as portion of stated range achieved. https://youtu.be/fvwOa7TCd1E&t=36m15s

> Seems like it’s common across all EVs for the range to be inflated by around 20%, at least for freeway driving. Most people speed on the freeway. Extra speed reduces range significantly.

I make EVs at a different company, and I'm not a fan of Tesla's range indicator. It's misleading because miles don't map directly onto battery charge. The range that that indicates is miles on flat level ground with no wind at 55mph which you will never experience in real life. At 80mph you're going to get 2/3 of that range every time. At 35mph you can get significantly higher range, but no one is ever going to drive…

> but no one is ever going to drive 300+ miles at 35mph

but I have driven 35mph on slow city streets to make it to the next charging station when the one I was at was full with a line. (years ago)

I got a model S with maximum range. It promised 370 miles of range on a single charge, and I don't know what stretch of road exists that that isn't a lie for.

I never got 300 miles of range on it.

Now, to their credit... Did I need that much range? No. But it would be nice to not be lied to.
