How about replacing with a "real" computer? I stopped accepting these compromises around 2004, and since then have built my own computers from discrete components.

I don’t mean to discredit Framework in the slightest but they are still leagues away from Apple when it comes to build quality. The entire industry struggles to match Apple’s fit and finish, it will be an uphill battle for a hardware based startup. I do hope they succeed.

Yes true, I was probably too optimistic with "a couple of years."

It is a limitation of the chip. The M1 chip and the M1 Pro chip are not the same chip. The laptop itself has nothing to do with it. If they decided to put an M1 Pro chip into the MacBook Air, it would be able to have 2 external displays.

Base price is still fine for the product, but RAM/SSD upgrade fee is the pain.

This hasn't been my experience. How many CPU cores we talking here? Haven't really run into Zoom perf problems since running it on a dual-core 2015 i5 MBP. Since 2019, I have been using Zoom multiple times per day on an early 2019 and a last 2019 Intel-based Macbook. Both are 6-core Intel i7 based. One with 16GB, one with 32GB. I honestly wonder if parent plugged their MacBook into power on their left? I’ve found my meet conferences are unbearable when my MBP is plugged into the wrong side and then overheats and throttles the CPU.

No chance unfortunately. Windows 11 has pop up "notifications" that are basically ads all over. Unnecessarily hard to cleanup / customize in a biz setting. Asahi Linux is running well enough to be usable for lots of things. However, no screen brightness control, no sound or YouTube currently. And there's some page size weirdness that means Chrome/Electron (?) is not usable, so no VS Code. If you can live with that, it's so nice having Linux on the M1 hardware.

YouTube is the acid2 test of the modern web. I had a laptop that didn't hardware accelerate youtube, and it ended up as a headless server.

Nothing game changing IMO. They added MagSafe charging. It’s thinner and lighter (the previous model was already thin and light). They added some new colors (I’m partial to the blue). The screen is a few pixels taller (however a new notch takes some of those pixels away). The camera is higher quality, the speakers are a bit better, and the screen gets a bit brighter.

24GB of RAM (formerly 16GB) is a big upgrade for me.

Genuinely curious, how did you avoid using it ?

I'd imagine changing brightness or sound volume + mute/unmute only with on screen controls and/or keyboards shortcuts could work, but that's a lot of shortcuts to remember for stuff that are only done a few times a day.

ah I missed those while I was watching the livestream, probably distracted with something at work, but what I saw was some 5 different graphs with 10core laptop pc, so was like what happened to comparison with M!.
