All i want is a laptop with similar build quality, battery life, and Ubuntu.
I’ve found that Ubuntu is the problem variable when it comes to battery life. I’ve never gotten it to behave comparably to MacOS or Windows on any hardware.

I really think that's what the Framework will be in a couple of years. I use one now and it's pretty great, but does have a few (totally acceptable to me) rough edges that they're working on.
I don’t mean to discredit Framework in the slightest but they are still leagues away from Apple when it comes to build quality. The entire industry struggles to match Apple’s fit and finish, it will be an uphill battle for a hardware based startup. I do hope they succeed.
Apple runs an entire supply chain, for a small company it’s fantastic to be half as good
bonus: it’s a niche I can’t imagine Apple going after any time soon!

I am rough with mine (my first uses were on some IBM tank from the late 80s/early 90s when I was young and a Lenovo T61 in college). Spurious clicks and taps happen all the time when I end up using the things. I have spent minutes trying to get an Apple trackpad to perform to drag and drop and instead having it do every other thing from extra clicks on the way to zooming to running out of space when I get to the edge…
But all of that crap is optional. The first thing a macOS user should do on a new machine is go to system preferences > Trackpad and turn that stuff and "Force Touch" off.
That doesn't help when I'm using someone else's Macbook.

Why is that a downside? Magsafe was one of the best things about the older, early-2010's Macbooks.
Magsafe is fine; having to travel with a separate charging block is terrible. The USB-C consolidation has been awesome for people like me who travel frequently- my phone, external battery, M1 Air, headphones, Nintendo Switch... all charge over USB-C, so I only have to travel with a single charger. It's wonderful
The new MagSafe doesn't have a captive cable on the charger. It is a MagSafe cable plugged into a USB C charger. You can charge via a USB C cable but you give up a port and you can't get quick charging.

I like the XPS 13 line myself. The 93xx line lasted all night when I forgot to shut the lid one evening (9+ hours) with Fedora (after running `powertop` and doing its tweaks). But I'm also a "weirdo" who doesn't like Apple-made hardware (the trackpad, touchbar, keyboard, mouse, etc. are all inferior IMO), so maybe you're looking for something different there.

Same. It fires up full fans and all in the middle of the night.
It’s a nice form factor, but much like me growing tired of stuff like “android slowdown syndrome” and me getting an iPhone last fall … I feel like I’m being pushed to try a Mac laptop for a cycle….
I just don’t want to deal with this stuff anymore.

I think the 13" Pro is just to is linger until the 14" can drop in price enough to fill it's spot. The 13" Pro is now also the only Mac with a TouchBar, which is just strange.
Even the pricing makes me think that this is just a phase out. I'm willing to bet this is the last generation of 13" Pros. Just seems like the 14" is replacing it. As far as I can tell the Air is better than the 13" in almost every way, except maybe the bigger battery and active cooling. You can pay the $100 difference to upgrade the chip to be identical, which is odd for Apple. Usually there is still a minor premium.

While these are all legitimate and valid concerns. NONE of these companies have a religious cult-like fans defending every decision Apple has made. Apple has been caught and discovered doing some very BAD anti consumer/anti privacy deals, slave labor, and there's a whole cadre of people (not unlike yourself), defending these decisions as somehow being flawless. Beyond that, these fans bury all these discoveries at every possibility, and continue hyping Apple and gushing over their products even undeservedly at times. This will prove to be very damaging in the future, and this is why in my mind it's the most evil company. FB/Instagram at least people realize, acknowledge and not try to defend/bury it... which leads me to believe at least something will be done about it... eventually.

To clarify, you’re talking about the 13” Pro only. But yeah, total mystery to me why they’re still selling it. It made sense in 2020 on the cusp of the Intel/Silicon transition, but now that we already have the redesigned 14”, don’t really understand what they’re doing here. Who would buy one of these? I might go for it. If it weren't for the keyboard and the odd battery/performance issues with my late 2016MBP I'd be happy with it. When I got it I thought it was too thin, but I got used to it and now the new 14" feels bulky. I loved mag safe, but it's not a must have. I love the 4 USB-C ports, I don't need any other connectors, and I actually enjoy the touch bar.
I'd have to test the keyboard though, the new pro keyboard is awesome so maybe I don't want to miss out on that.

Why purchase a 13in pro over the m2 chip air?
Probably the biggest reason is the fan. Allows for increased sustained performance as benchmarks have shown with M1.
That’s a fair point. And I guess Apple wouldn’t keep selling them if people weren’t buying.

I recently bought an M1 Air and I miss the magsafe charger. I really don't understand why they try to move away from it. A reliable working solution to a problem.
