I have a feeling that using a UI that lacks haptic feedback will be exhausting to use over extended periods of time.

The idea of waving my arms around in the air for ten hours does not fill me with anticipatory glee!

I’m afraid it’s a fact, the fidelity of current VR/AR tech just isn’t high enough. Money really is being thrown at the problem, but there is no magic wand available at any price. These advances take time.

This comes up a lot in VR/AR discussions, but IMO it's the least likely application in the near to medium term. There's just not enough pixels in the headset to accurately simulate multiple high-resolution monitors. For instance, the Hololens is rumored to have 1280x720 resolution per-eye - so a screen that consumes the entire visual field is only 720p, and "simulated displays" that were farther away would be worse.

Wow. Clay Bavor is one of the most articulate speakers that I've ever heard. He delivered a talk with an extremely high information density so cleanly. I really just want to hear this guy talk about things more.

This unveiling doesn’t commit to the shape of the product. It doesn’t describe technical details, like the processing power, number or spectrum of cameras, radios, anything. It doesn’t commit to a price range, like “under $1200”. What’s unveiled?

HoloLens costs $3000-$5000. They'd have to get a huge price reduction relative to that for this to be anything other than a niche product.

Price reduction or feature improvement. I want the later.

So...how's this different than the Microsoft HoloLens? Seems to be a huge let down considering the hype machine. Also, the form factor makes me want to vomit. Look there are 2 possible market segments you could go for that might buy this thing - the staid corporate type that is potentially looking for a toy that they can convince their SO is actually for work. In that case it should look like a pair of chunky raybans…

After years of nothing to show and an astounding $1.8bn + in funding your expectations should have been very low. I mean, when has that ever worked out? If Magic Leap is still around in 5 years I'd be extremely surprised.

They’re doing hardware research and development. They’re not building a Web 2.0 bootstrap site that is going to get “just 1% of college students” to pay $10 per month.

I fully agree. But remember that gamers are passionate folk who are willing to throw their hard-earned money away at this hobby. That revenue will be used, we hope, to develop the next generation of displays which will have sufficient foveal resolution to be used as a monitor replacement. I would love to leave my dual 27" monitor desk behind and travel the world while doing my work. That day will come. But I'm afraid that it'll be too late for me - I'll have already retired.

I don't think we can really compare 3 years to the 15 years Duke Nukem Forever was in development for.

If we're talking videogames plenty of games have 3 year development periods.

Why, because AR needs to be bright enough to not be drowned out (even with Magic focus cues) by background light. Right now, that means that they project a small field of view. It appears that both MagicLeap and HoloLens are ~35deg FOV. A typical max resolution would be 30-60pix/deg (neither achieves this!). This means that you can get at most a single FHD resolution monitor in view at a time.

If you want to have something like a seemless experience, you need something closer to 90deg field of view and several thousand linear pixels (e.g. 5-10Mpix per eye) at near retina resolution. That is VERY hard even for the biggest GPUs (that don't fit on your belt) even at 60Hz. If you want to avoid dizzyness, then you want >90Hz and <10ms latency.
