Thoughts on the UK? I'm supposed to go on a vacation to England for a week starting April 1st

I'm supposed to start a short contract there end of March, and I'm considering cancelling. UK seems to be 4-6 weeks (EDIT: 2-3 weeks) behind Italy now, and I don't want to get stuck in a different country than the rest of my family, without even an insurance number (apparently, it takes more than a month to acquire one; end of April, I'm betting the country will be in total lockdown).

The UK is only two weeks behind Italy. Look at the numbers.

This is an account from one of the doctors in Italy. https://twitter.com/jasonvanschoor/status/123714289107769753... Read the whole thing, but this passage in particular is just chilling. "5/ Patients above 65 or younger with comorbidities are not even assessed by ITU, I am not saying not tubed, I’m saying not assessed and no ITU staff attends when they arrest. Staff are working as much as they can but they are start…

I fixed the formatting, typos, and expanded the jargon: From a well respected friend and intensivist/A&E consultant who is currently in northern Italy: I feel the pressure to give you a quick personal update about what is happening in Italy, and also give some quick direct advice about what you should do. First, Lumbardy is the most developed region in Italy and it has a extraordinary good healthcare, I have worked i…

Did you also fix the uncoroborated nature of the news? You know, the "well respected friend" part of it by reaching out to said person? If not, this whole thing just shows again how dangerous Twitter can be in that regard.

Something we can all do as individuals is stop going out to unnecessary things. I'm avoiding restaurants, bars, gyms and large groups.

ah, the joys of being deeply introverted. avoiding restaurants, bars, gyms, and large groups -- why, that's my ideal day.

Turns out that mental health situations are just suvivor bias.

He who is catatonically depressed is the one to wake up alone after the plague.

They do, but only when they want so, like they want endless exponential growth of economy but not energy consumption.

Most people don't think of 2% annual growth as exponential.

And even fewer realize that a 2.1% growth rate is itself exponentially faster than a 2% growth rate.

If something grows by 2% per day, vs 2.1% per day, after a year the second one is >20x bigger.

I'm feeling the same. I just started becoming concerned on Friday, and trying to keep up on accurate news. Do you, or anyone else in the US know how to help raise public awareness for prevention, preparedness for the worse, or lessening the impact on healthcare systems and communities? I feel like this needs its own thread, or platform for collaboration. I'm worried that without wider availability of testing, we're a…

good luck with that. you think it would be possible for people to look at china and italy and realize the same thing is now happening here in the US. but large percentage populace has already been fed multiple contradictory narratives and have convinced themselves it's "just the flu" as it's the most convenient reality. your "science" is fairly useless in combatting ignorance, arrogance and selfishness. but regardles…

Combatting selfischness is absolutely necessary. Unfortunately, news outlets are to bussy spreading panic to adress the actual risks of hording stuff fromm food over medical PTE to toilett paper.

> These politicians are representative of their voters, as democracy should be. Isn't it that they make decisions on behalf of the voters and should take the best professional advice on their behalf?

That is the difference between a democracy and a republic.

That is the difference between a chicken and a bird.

You're right; mental brain fart on my end (I was thinking of doublings, but I wrote weeks).

I think the sequence of choices is what matters most. First they ‘quarantined’ Lombardia and some surrounding provinces. This looked nonsensical, or worse, as the contagion spread was nationwide already. Not two full days after, they are extending the restrictive measures to the whole of Italy. The net result is to have scared back home a lot of people working or studying in Lombardia, thereby easing the potential bu…

You left really early. What indicators were you looking at to make the call? Is it just you? In a major west coast city and trying to think through when to leave. Too early better than too late but I don’t have a cabin in the mountains so it will be a significant cost to hide out for a month.

It was part coincidence. I had a week without teaching duties. But I packed for a long stay. What convinced me was the carefree attitude of many.

Two examples:

"Nothing to worry about, it is just a little more than a regular flu" (Attilio Fontana, Governor of Lombardia)

"#milanononsiferma" (Giuseppe Sala, Major of Milano)

Am I the only to catch the very first sentence? "From a well respected friend and intensivist/A&E consultant who is currently in northern Italy:" Basically, that make this twitter thread uncorborated news unless someone reached out to the Italian doctor referenced in it.

The doctor posted a cut of a article on twitter. So its basically a retweet.
