I'd be more enthusiastic if they hadn't left the flipper zero community in the lurch and basically abandoned it over the last year (and more obvious in the last 6 months). A new product doesn't mean as much when the business behind it doesn't demonstrate follow through in their first product (even something as simple as giving the community the ability to merge PRs or do releases of bugfixes).

It is a way to switch into a different configs. Just like when you switch to a new set of packages when you update your channels (or flake) and you get activated with the new versions. Same thing with specializations, just you can choose to have a different set of packages activated and enabled in each different specialization. Like having multiple different configs in one.

Yes. The binary blob handling the link training procedure needs not just the firmware portion implementing the link training (i.e. generate test signals, observe link quality) but also the pre-obtained measurement data.
So, to re-implement it you need to have a deep understanding about the entire hardware stack, knowledge that isn't even made available under NDA.

Re: the on-device AI, most people don't know what they don't know. And they don't know that there's dozens of on-device AI applications that already exist in the real world using tiny AI models. ESP32-S3's have been doing on-device AI for years . That's a 240MHz processor with 512KB SRAM, 16MB PSRAM and no GPU, and AI works great on it.
Of course, if you had a custom trained one that's different but then that brings me back to how are you gonna type with it easily?

From the FlipCTL description, I'm surmising the intended use case is this as a cyberdeck aka using it for external tasks, vs. hacking on it at home with your actual keyboard. For example you make a config for X task at home and perform X task on the go. I do not see any indication that this is meant to be a primary device

Phones have not been communication devices for a decade unless you want to extend the definition to social media and media consumption, in which case there would be little reason not to extend it to also cover what the Flipper One purports to support - not much of that is not covered by a phone
