#492This would break the social contract of Twitter, as it was preceived my many people. Unlike Facebook "walled garden" model Twitter was ultimately an open web publishing platform. Changing this will move them into a different category and many users will look elswhere.

I don’t understand the HB obsession with not creating accounts or reading Twitter. I haven’t logged into Twitter in years I stay logged in. Also reading Twitter is trivial people have consumed countless billions of tweets. Yet for some reason programmers on HN struggle with it.
It lets them track you across sites that use their iframes.
Scary. Patagonia might show me an ad when i read the WSJ since i follow their twitter account.

#498On top of it, it's not just a matter of creating an account because they get blocked within two minutes until you also give them your phone number, despite the registration pretends it's not required (because once you signed up, it's easier to trick people into giving up yet more information than asking for it upfront).
FWIW: HN are receptive to member feedback about improvements to Hacker News itself.
This includes both encouraging sites, content, and/or users, and suggestions as to unwelcomed behaviour.

It's not apples to oranges, it's directly analogous: both represent federated networks on the internet where users have the freedom to decide which client they want to use and which servers they want to connect to.
They are not analogous. IRC is a chat protocol with semantics suitable for a chat protocol. HTTP is at this point just a transport level thing for whatever you want to send. It doesn't have any significant semantic implications for sites like Twitter.
