They are not really friends since https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Sino-Japanese_War

Yeah but why are they censoring any mention of the country. Is Japan's existence controversial or something.

It appears that countries like China would like to be able to decide that.

Given the outsized effect of flags in comparison to upvotes, I’m of the opinion that Chinese national HN members, and some subset of “no politics evar” crowd is more than enough to flag these to just shy of being dead.

Please keep nationalistic attacks off this forum. You have no idea the sort of pressure that users with minority perspectives because of their national/ethnic backgrounds are under on this majority-Western forum. People have literally been hounded off this site after getting attacked for this. Is that the kind of community you, or any of us, want to be part of? Of course it is not. Therefore, don't include swipes lik…

The free world is under attack. We could seriously lose many of our freedoms. It's not racist to be suspicious of CCP sympathizers who are PRC nationals any more than it was racist to be suspicious of communist-sympathizing Russians during the cold war.

EDIT: HN's contact email is working fine; the evidence presented was known to be invalid before it was posted and used in bad faith to bait the conversation. It worked fine when I emailed them yesterday using a non-Gmail email client and server. You’re suggesting that all email for YCombinator is down (or, worse, some/all of Google Apps) so that seems worth proving out. I checked and there aren’t any posts today abou…

> You're suggesting that all email for YCombinator is down No, I'm suggesting that their mail server is not reachable over unencrypted SMTP from random probably-residential IP addresses. This is fairly typical IME, and is why > Using a post or comment is a terribly inefficient way to go about doing this [...] I'm exhausted of otherwise good-standing and high-karma users using posts and comments to bring things to the…

I emailed them a few minutes ago and they replied to confirm that they’re able to receive email.

While I respect that you may be demanding a certain standard of their mail server’s telnet responses that Google is refusing to meet, I imagine either that you are able to send them email and simply do not wish to, or that you have consciously chosen not to be able to email anyone hosting email with Google in deference to your objections at how Google operates. In any case, whatever the reason, I wish you the best of luck with your choices.

Looks like it has now been updated and returns images of various tanks and male athletes, but still no images of what seems most relevant to the phrase - the iconic Tiananmen Square photograph that goes by that name.

This is where it gets distressing. I'm now seeing tank man, it's image number 27... recently posted news article. When a page returns "no results," something is obviously being banned or censored... at least we know. If the action is less explicit, we can't really know for sure what's happening. How do you distinguish tank man losing prominence from the millions of people complaining that their posts, sites or whatno…

Twenty minutes ago I got random tanks. Now I get the expected results.

The implications of what you said sound kind of racist to me. I suspect that's why you seem to have been downvoted.

I definitely do not support excluding or discriminating against Chinese users, a practice which is a big problem on HN. I'm just saying that, just as a significant subset of USA users are likely to flag posts that encourage people to burn American flags or claim that the USA is a "white-supremacist state", and a significant subset of Muslim users are likely to flag posts that criticize Muhammad, there's a significant…

Fair points, I think, to a degree.

Mind you, I wasn't trying to accuse you of being racist. I purposefully phrased my comment the way I did not to be obtuse but to allow for the fact that coming across as racist may not have been your intention. I still think the way you phrased in the comment I replied to had the issue I mentioned.

Don't we all know that the CCP employs agents to flag critical content. Do we have any reason to think said agents aren't active here?

I don't think this sort of baseless speculation is useful. God forbid a Chinese citizen support their own government without being an agent or brainwashed. Way to deny a billion people the agency to disagree with you. Flagged this comment; US citizen, btw

When you say support their own government you should remember that it's not their own government. They don't have any choice in who represents them unless they are one of the 9% of the population that is a member of the CCP.

Legitimate criticism of the CCP results in rather intense flagging. I'm no angel and I've definitely made comments that deserved flagging on HN and I really try hard to play by the rules that dang sets, but it's a rather clear pattern that certain subjects solicit pretty intense flagging despite not really being "nationalistic flame bait". In case dang sees this I hope I'm not violating further rules of service I'm j…

Even then, mods can override those flags, which in this case seems to not be happening. Especially given the [dupe] designation on another post

What I'm curious about is why I'm not able to flag comments. I have 8633 karma yet users with a much lower number appear to be able to flag comments. I'm assuming I lost this privilege because I had comments that were flagged?

When you click on a comment timestamp to view an individual comment, do you see a flag link? If not, you might want to contact the mods to see if there is something else going on.

Edit: argh, I confused you with the GP commenter. I'm terribly sorry! Obviously "you" doesn't mean you in the below. I'm usually more careful but today has been a bit hectic with several high-intensity threads going at once, and evidently I've been dropping packets. --- If you hope Chinese users feel welcome here, you need to make some massive adjustments to the commenting style you exemplified above, because accusin…

Heh, it might also be hard to swallow because this rebuke puts words in the parent commenter’s mouth — they are not the “Chinese nationals” commenter. Your original point remains, of course, and thank you for saying it.

Yikes! Sorry all, and especially Hnrobert42 - I didn't see that I was replying to someone else than the GP commenter. I've added to my post to clarify that now.

Thank you for the heads up! I usually don't make that mistake, and it's embarrassing.

That is false. If you changed "always" to "sometimes" you'd be on the green. I've written about this extensively: https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=false&so... Some good threads to start with might be https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22902490 and https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21607844 . Also https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17014869 , which shows how far back political discussion goes…

Not american here. My reponse is not directly to this subthread, but to likening this subject to politics. I think there is a massive difference between political discourse (which are mostly about opinions) and fact vs lies discourse (which I would qualify as one where something that is definitely provable or in this case definitely happened is denied as untruth or never happening by one side, with said side pushing…

I appreciate your comment but I think you make a mistake in treating "facts" as if fact-discourse is somehow different than political discourse. I don't mean 'there are no facts' or 'truth is what you make of it' or anything like that. Rather, the problem is one of selection. There are infinitely many facts. Selecting the facts that serve your purpose and omitting the ones that don't is not only a political choice, it's the quintessence of political discourse.

https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=false&qu...

While I certainly agree (if I hear you correctly) that truth matters and there is such a thing as loving the truth for its own sake, I don't agree that public discourse can be divided in the way you posit. Quite the opposite.
