This is a pretty unimpeachable causal identification strategy finding Facebook's rollout caused worse mental health issues https://www.aeaweb.org/articles?id=10.1257/aer.20211218

It's hard to do similarly high quality studies today because no one rolls social media out gradually anymore.

You describe the apps as though they are recreational drugs with no other purpose but to produce endorphins. These 'apps' have a high level of utility - which is, I imagine, why most start to use them in the first place.

The utility is not of existential importance. Yes, you can uninstall Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, and the sky will not fall, life will just go on.

My neighbors and school parents all coordinate via WhatsApp. The sky will not fall no, but if you don't join those groups you wouldn't know about upcoming HOA meetings, school events, important forms to fill etc.

Facebook is useful for bigger communities like moms groups. We found babysitters that way.

One of my social clubs tried to skip out of social media and was originally meeting in person, calling each other etc, but information just fell through the cracks as the club got larger.

Propylene glycol covers the alvoelae and over time (~15-20 years) blocks uptake of oxygen, causing respiratory failure and a slow, painful death.

Vegetable glycerine coats the lungs and over time (~10-25 years) blocks fluid from draining out of the lungs, causing congestive heart failure/pulmonary edema. Which ends up causing one to drown in their own bodily fluids and a slow, painful death.

If you disagree, please cite any long term studies that disprove the above. Thanks!

Have they? I know a lot of my peers went to college for free with the Millennium Scholarship. But so many young people vape now that it's becoming cool to smoke analog cigarettes. I barely knew anyone who smoked 10-20y ago. Many people that age now do.

Analog cigarettes! I love how “analog” has become synonymous with everything more manual, natural, even or better.

I know this is not a popular viewpoint around here, but as a socialist, let me ask you this question: have we considered that the market itself might be the problem? That maybe the incentives it creates are toxic for humanity?

As a moderate, I tend to think things even out eventually - though it is usually what appears to be generational shifts in behavior that causes markets to adapt. It's costly (whole generations get f'd physically/mentally/financially), but the next generation (maybe?) pushes for something different idk

I appreciate the perspective and I can see the logic, thank you for explaining your position.

That being said, the timescale of change in that proposed mechanism seems too slow to me given the extreme urgency I see in the climate crisis. Do you see a way out of it without systemic change? Do you not share the same assessment of urgency?

Yeah, they should at least pay it to the children. For rich people, fines are just the price of doing things

The children are free to file their own lawsuit to get money.
