#463I have a serious question to anyone working at Meta and reading this: HOW can you still work at this company!? Why don't you quit this very toxic company, and start working at another place or even on your own? I genuinely don't understand... Let just Meta die!
This is a tough one because I've been there. I have worked for orgs that don't align with my values, but when you're in there you aren't thinking that you are contributing to the absolutely horrible crap they're doing. You just keep telling yourself, "I just do this one little thing." And that's enough to convince yourself that it's ok. You're keeping your values and morals intact.
Saying that, I'm sure if more of them had options they'd jump in a heartbeat.

I always ask companies to remove that clause from contracts, I think all offers I've ever got had that clause, but also 100% removed it on request.
Interesting. I've always asked, too, and 0% were willing to make any changes to their policies. I suppose it has a lot to do with the size of the company and your relative bargaining power.
Probably cultural norms and location play a huge role here, I'm in a nordic country and feel like trust is generally high and people are reasonable.
My bargaining power is not that high and managed to do this from tiny companies to global corporates.

In the US, there's the expectation that when you use an employer-provided device that any and all activity on it can be fully monitored/recorded and used against the employee for any reason. Work wants me to use a phone for work, they get me a work phone. Or I dont do it.
Why? If you have ever had to go through discovery, Youd know. Company I worked for got sued by Oracle for bullshit licensing (aws RDS licensed oracle is evidently NOT for commercial use, sigh).
And know what they do for all engineers maintaining? They subpoena EVERYTHING.
If you did personal stuff on work machine, your personal stuff is now in lawsuit scope.

#467I don't work for Meta, but how many more years do I need to work in tech? I'm in my 40s and my kids are young. I've already set up 529s for them, and am paying for some expensive home upgrades. Maybe when that is finished and I've built up a buffer I can switch industries for the last 5-10 years of my working life. Curious if anyone here has any similar plans.
When I was younger (50ish now) I could juggle full time work with side projects but I just can't now, especially with family demands. Full time work is pretty much burning me out. I'm close to leaving and starting a mobile food cart.
When I do get out I'll definitely miss the salary. I'll miss lunch with the other devs. Miss the walks with other devs around the building. Theres something special about folks in engineering. When I'm serving up lunch and overhear some folks talking SDLC I'll smile and reminisce. But its not for me any more. I'm the gray hat now and have no desire to write code for someone elses fortune. Good luck getting out!

None of that is specific to this industry. It’s far worse in others. Grass always looks greener elsewhere
From what I've observed, the big problem with working in tech is that you have all of the responsibility but none of the authority or autonomy. By comparison, in most service sector jobs you have no authority or autonomy but also little responsibility. In other engineering disciplines you have a lot of responsibility but also much more authority and autonomy.
You really put it succinctly and very accurately, I imagine you read this somewhere?

Why would you ever login to a sensitive account on a device you don't own and have root on? Like I trust my employer not to do anything shifty with my banking info, if I were to use it, but I'm not going to take that chance for a dozen reasons.
You probably use direct deposit in which case your employer already has your banking info
your employer knows how much they paid you and what account they paid to. They don't know your balance, where else you might be getting money from (selling science fiction short stories eh, Cosgrove?! This job should be enough for you!!), that you have donated money to the Democrats recently!! We suggested that was bad!! And lots of other things that come under banking info.
