I think the scale of the 'Exposure' does matter here (please don't just downvote, hear me out). Exposure = Advertisement, right? Wouldn't you pay for advertisement? Now, if you invest very little for advertisement, you might get very little in return. Say, your investment is doing a free 'exposure' gig for a return of 20-30 potential customers. This might not be equitable to your time/equipment/team/etc. Now, in the…

Exposure doesn't work when you realize you've signed a contract saying you can't advertise that you worked on this TV show. The only exposure you'll get is that the production now knows you're a sucker to call again. Do people really think the show will let the photographer blast their pictures with "Joes photography did this" all over the internet? Best you'll be able to do is tell your friends verbally.

Is this opinion only, or actual knowledge or experience?

You might be right, in which case I'd agree with you (I have no experience with those details on contract provisions), but again it goes back to being a business decision :).

This is one of those things often asserted but rarely proven.

You don't know of any person in a service trade that did promo work to build their portfolio? I know auto mechanics, actors, hair people, nail people, home inspectors, photographers, and cooks who have done free work for free promotions. Some people hate on the concept but it's how people get their start in an industry.

If you think the idea that people will stop valuing things they can get for free and refuse to pay for them is far fetched, I encourage you to see how your hometown newspaper is doing.

I would like to see some statistics on how many interneships are actually unpaid. Does it vary by industry? In the before times, when we worked on campus and had interns, ours were paid the same as full time employees and had paid for housing and benefits.

A couple of years ago numbers were in the 500k to 1M per year: https://greenlining.org/blog-category/2020/unpaid-internship...

Out of how many? I don't know if that is a low or high percentage.

>The actors guild union actually demand Not sure this is true. Can you point to where in the bylaws this is stated?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen_Actors_Guild#Becoming_a...

None of what you link shows anything about SAG demanding actors to do unpaid work. The second option specifically states that you must provide vouchers and then ulimately proof of paid work on three separate occasions as a background actor. The first option is a no-brainer in that you're getting paid as a lead. The 3rd option of being a member in good standing with another union also has nothing to do with doing unpaid work.

If you offer someone with the expectation they can't say no, that is in fact predatory. Many of these people have been loongg without work, I doubt they didn't expect people to bite thinking this is their big Hollywood break. I can offer a bum $1000 to stab a guy for YouTube, but if he happens to say no and walks away, that's not predatory? I know it's a stretch, but that is the core argument you are making

> If you offer someone with the expectation they can't say no, that is in fact predatory. In the absence of coercion or fraud, the offering party's expectations are irrelevant.

its absolutely relevant...intent is everything. I mean, we're talking the core definition of the word, 'Predatory', exploiting others.

I should have clarified that its in my own experience, based on some of the non-disclosure stuff I've had to sign. Everything depends on the employer though; they most likely could list it on their resume, but probably not much more than that.

My point was more that the show is offering an illusion of exposure, when they'll be lucky if they are even mentioned in the credits.

My relative who was in the video game industry wasn't even allowed to list their most recent jobs actual employment to their next employer, as another example of strong contract

Your reply is odd. You wanted "proof" work-for-promotions happen and I just wanted to point out this happens in several trades.

Anyway, I don't disagree with your comment at all.

Certain trades are undervalued because it takes portfolio building or practice in a professional setting to get started. You seemed to be unaware that this happens but now it seems you do?

I didn’t want proof they happened. I wanted proof they have the touted benefits. That is what I am not convinced of. I believe “exposure” through free work is of very little value.

To all the folks who would do it "for the exposure": my partner volunteered as a graphic designer for a well-known European charity event that featured a former US president, known music groups and fashion designers as pro bono acts and had a live TV broadcast. She really liked to volunteer and we received free tickets for said event and definitely enjoyed it. She added the project to her CV, but unfortunately it had…

You're saying she should have made money from this charity event she volunteered for? Or just avoided it, because she didn't get any meaningful "exposure" out of it? For the second time in this posting, as a (northern) European I'm quite puzzled about all of this. I think we may have wildly differing thoughts about what concepts like "volunteering" and "charity" mean.

None of those, I believe? Both the parties should be clear on what they are doing and why.

If you are doing volunteering for charity because you want to do good by the society, great! If you think this is an opportunity that will multiply and pay you back tenfold, then no, that's not gonna happen.

Similarly for the organizers, if you are asking for someone's time or expertise for free because you want them to contribute to a cause, great! If you are asking them for a free service because you won't pay / feel this is a great opportunity for them, grow up.

Point is that justifying and evaluating this is hard. Like really hard. It is especially hurtful to younger / less experienced people because if you have not been in the business for long, you don't know enough dynamics and factors and costs etc and you just might make the wrong decision.

It's all speculation (much like advertisement, I agree). But as much as we hate advertising industry because of their data collection practices and stuff, they do provide you a metric in return while this doesn't.
