They have been working on locking those down too, even before they announced the switch to ARM, which will continue this trend.

I'm gonna need actual examples.

There is nothing on my Mac that prevents me from downloading and running absolutely anything I want, or from writing my own software and running it.

By default, there are security guardrails in place that you have to turn off (one click!), but I 100% support measures like this. It means it's harder for nontechnical people get duped into running nefarious code, but creates no meaningful roadblock to people like HN readers who quite reasonably want to do whatever the hell they like with their computers.

They restrict user with every new macOS release.

Nope.

Yet despite this, more Apple users have been infected with malware (Xcodeghost) than users of Amazon and Google Android devices combined, despite there being far more Amazon and Google Android users than Apple users.

I'm not sure that's true... Xcodeghost was a single attack that affected ~4000 apps and got it contained comparatively quickly, whereas Android devices get infected with virus-laden with quite regularly. https://www.androidcentral.com/nearly-impossible-remove-andr... https://www.forbes.com/sites/thomasbrewster/2019/07/10/25-mi... https://in.pcmag.com/security/138196/android-users-need-to-m... https://www.foolproofme.…

Xcodeghost alone infected hundreds of millions of people (including all Wechat users). Let's add up your examples.

The first one infected a few thousand. The second one spread on Chinese phones, not Google or Amazon phones. The third infected about 120k users. The fourth infected 1 million users. The fifth infected 10 million users.

So the Apple App Store infected at least an order of magnitude more users despite having an order of magnitude fewer users total. Why at least? Apple does not allow third party security apps on its devices, so there are likely to be way more infections that we just haven't heard of.

You can do what you want with your phone. You have a legal right to jailbreak it and hack on it in any way you like.

Ok. I want to run iSh by installing it from the developer's signed build. That's what I want to do. Can I do that?

Yes - jailbreak the phone.

then why is apple breaking jailbreaks with every new phone?

Jailbreaks rely on security vulnerabilities which they want to fix.

Why wouldn’t they? Macs and iOS devices are for completely different purposes.

What’s such a special purpose for a Mac? Running Xcode? This lock down will just get worse as they allow running iOS apps on macs and developers start hacking these things to bits and bypassing AppStore. Apple will have no choice but to make macOS basically follow iOS model.

Maybe, or maybe they’ll just tolerate some amount of piracy on the Mac.

It wouldn’t impact iOS at all, so it wouldn’t be any worse than the current situation.

Did those parental control apps actually work? I wasn’t aware iOS actually provided enough low level access for 3rd parties to develop anything like that.

Generally they relied on profiles that restricted access to certain applications and added VPNs to sinkhole traffic to undesirable domains.

So basically a crude and unsupported hack.

I’m not surprised they didn’t keep them in the store.

Are you an iOS developer? Do you own an iPhone?

Irrelevant.

Not at all.

The commenter claims to be imprisoned by Apple.

If that’s true, I want to understand how they got that way.

If it’s not true, then their entire argument is questionable.

This is not an accurate representation of reality. Users simply cannot control their devices. No individual can no matter how skilled. Software complexity moved past that point decades ago. All we can actually do is choose who to trust when we acquire software. Nobody is forced to choose or trust Apple, but many do. Since choices exist for people who want to decide for themselves who they trust to provide software, t…

You can do anything you want to with your own phone.

The law allows you to hack on it in any way you like.

What you are saying is that you don’t have the capacity to make the phone do what you want.

You want Apple to do that work, and you want the government to force them to do it for you.

That is not the same thing.

You didn’t have to buy it if it didn’t do what you wanted.

Are you claiming you didn’t know it was locked down before you bought it?
