You must only be counting base? With bonuses and RSU grants (counting only what vests the first year) Google definitely pays better than 90k for new grad software engineers.

I'm sure he is too, but we've been discussing only base salaries so far. I'm guessing total compensation might differ even more.

But it's silly to just count base. When I started I made around $115 my first year. Only 90 base. At my next job the difference was even more dramatic.

The game doesn't sell well enough to cover running costs.

What are the running costs - does it have an online component? Or just the fees they have to pay to Steam?

They had wages to pay. (IIRC they had somewhere from 5 - 10 full time employees).
