If I'm an executive at Meta, I'm not sure whether I should be happy or sad reading this review. By all accounts, Apple is at least 5 years ahead of Meta in terms of hardware. With all of Apple's compute/display tech, and at 8-9x the price point of Quest, it still seems like the Vision Pro falls short of delivering the breakthrough experience needed to make AR/VR mass market. Not to mention that it still doesn't seem…

If their price was 8-9x higher, I’m sure meta could pull off something similar. The reason they can’t is their target price is much lower.

They could make the Quest feel more premium for 8-9x the cost, and include a lot of the AVP features (better eye tracking, better passthrough cameras), but I don't think they have the capacity to be making M1/R1 like chipsets or micro OLED screens at scale. The chipset in particular is a big reason why Apple is able to have their "sub-12ms latency" that makes the passthrough feel convincing.

Now those definitely exist in a research lab somewhere on the Meta campus, but I doubt they're close to making them in high quantities.

That'd be fitting. Maybe the charging port is inside of it right between your eyes so you have to charge it like their old mouse you had to flip over dead.

> charge it like their old mouse you had to flip over dead That's not "their old mouse", it's the current mouse. We're still on the 2015 design with the charging port at the bottom. (I have one and I don't mind/care, I just chuckle once a month when I remember to charge it)

Oh wow I didn't know they even still sold that. If you're still on an actual 2015 that's an impressive mouse life. I've got a 2-3 year old Logitech MX3 (I own 4-5 MXs) and this one is starting to act up bad.

Ha, I was downvoted and told "why do we need controllers, the iphone and macbook dont come with controllers" yesterday when I said this is stupid without controllers. I have a vive, q2 and q3. Look at him trying to type on that keyboard. I have hand gestures on my q3. They're nice for a few certain things, but thankfully I can forget they exist for 99% of what I do, that isn't flinging windows/screens left and right…

> And.. you can't do multiple screens and it has less resolution than my real life monitor when connecting to a mbp.. hm. I thought that was a super cool feature when I thought you could just add monitors wherever. I hadn't even thought of it before they showed it in the demo. That's the main feature I would have bought this device for - seamless window sharing between apple devices/macbooks. Sad to see it isn't the…

Did you consider the Big Screen? I know nothing about the Vision or the Big Screen but they seem similar-ish.

edit: Now that I've watched the visor video it seems almost 100% focused on productivity with monitors, interesting

Thank you. Your experience with the Quest 2 mirrors my own. I'm undecided if I will try a Q3 or skip a generation. It definitely seems like things are moving in the right direction and I'm excited about that!

I'd advice you to skip another generation. I can give my experience with it. I have Q3 and try to use it for work from time to time and it is still not enough to replace an actual monitor, at least for me. FOV of 110 degress is too narrow, maybe 140 degress would solve it, but I'm not sure. The thing is that apparently I glance to content without turning my head a lot and I discovered it when I tried to use Q3 for ac…

Thanks! I really appreciate your insights on this. I do enjoy the Q2 for entertainment and I use it a lot in that context, since I enjoy this as is, I feel like I can at least skip a generation since the work-part isn't there.

Incidentally it seems like the apple set does a much better job of this if you are in the apple ecosystem, but at such a high cost and limit on the entertainment options, at least for now.

Mine is around 4 years old, but it's the 2015 design (Magic Mouse 2nd gen).

That's not the point. That is what I have now and my tv starts up in a big ugly display with an ad for Google TV and an admonition to enable it. I've read online some smart tvs will complain, often, to please connect them. I'd like a tv that works for me, not for the tv manufacturer. It's also got a remote with way too many buttons like "Netflix" "Disney+" etc. Touch them by accident and it immediately goes to "setup…

to be honest, even AppleTV has per app ads I wish I could turn off. Whatever app is highlighted gets to show ads on the top half of the screen. I'd prefer no ads unless I launch the app

If that’s the case for you, I’d recommend putting other apps in your top row.

I have Plex, Podcasts, Soma FM, VLC, and Settings in my top row. None of them show me ads; I get to see what I’m in the middle of watching or listening to and jump directly to that content if I want.

Settings is the outlier, as I like to check the battery status of my remote somewhat often, but again, no ads for any of the apps I listed.

I just sit behind my desk, put on the glasses and start working.

Maybe you’re not aware of the feature that both Meta Remote Desktop and Virtual Desktop offer, to auto-connect when the headset is put on. No friction.

OTOH, VD only permits 1 virtual display, and Meta RD offers 3x1080p ones, but both options are plenty sharp to work on.

The free Desktop+ overlay for SteamVR, however provides unlimited virtual displays of any resolution. That’s what I prefer, but it doesn’t have the auto-connect feature like the other 2.

Not sure what you think you need hand tracking for, I use my keyboard and mouse like I do without the headset.

This product, and every similar headset to follow will never appeal to a mass market for daily hours-long usage. It's uncomfortable, isolating, constraining, expensive, anti-social and its use cases are at best temporarily impressive but quickly grow old. The entire product category simply sucks. I'm sure the incidental 3D movie experience is great, but most people don't watch movies every single day for hours on end…

You place a lot of emphasis on the social aspect, but we aren't necessarily in the days where we show everyone what's on our phone screens. My phone is pretty much a solo experience unless someone wants to take a picture of me. > Watch people with big monitor setups. They watch the middle one whilst the other 2 are stale and only get the occasional peek. That makes it sound unviable, but you underestimate how great a…

> big selling point for me, the ability to pack in a portable double/triple monitor setup

I also wish the Vision would do that, but it only allows one virtual display from your Mac, unless you’re satisfied with running iPhone and iPad apps as your “multiple monitors”.

> And.. you can't do multiple screens and it has less resolution than my real life monitor when connecting to a mbp I think there's still appeal in that you can take this monitor with you and float it in front of you wherever you want. That's worth the reduced resolution imo

If you’re satisfied with using only iPhone and iPad apps, then fair enough.
