This is a really important topic, and good that Vice is bringing it up now versus 5-10 years from now. I think they miss the more general point. It's clearly biased in its outputs, but the article dismisses this concern as "the end result of years of researcher trying to mitigate bias against minority groups". The way I interpret that is "its not biased, because its biased in the way we want it to be". If AI becomes…

I agree, and it's always going to be biased towards some direction, whether that's the views of the society it pulls most of its data from or the views of the organization that developed the AI. Heck, no one wants to end up with another Tay on their hands. I don't think there's such thing as a lack of bias, but it will be important how it is expressed through the AI. I don't mind an AI that is prepared to argue its b…

Here's what's still dawning on a lot of people: there's no such thing as an "objective" viewpoint. Even choosing which facts you reveal and which you withhold or in what order you reveal facts, or how much detail with which you reveal certain facts and generalize others: all of these outcomes are a result of an intrinsic hierarchy of values. It's impossible to navigate the world without one.

Actually, "woke" opinions do reflect those of the general population, which is exactly why conservatives feel they live in some kind of progressive hellscape.

Or, rather than posting non-sense, you could learn about what "woke" usually means in this context, which I can quote for you [1]: "shorthand for American Left ideas involving identity politics and social justice" "By 2020, members of the political center and right wing in several Western countries were using the term woke, often in an ironic way, as an insult for various progressive or leftist movements and ideologi…

I am well aware of what "woke" means, where the term came from, how it's been corrupted and by whom.

>Unless, of course, you believe that the term "general population" excludes the "political center and right wing in several Western countries" and only includes "the American Left".

Yes. Because the linked article is discussing an article by the National Review, an American conservative magazine, about the complex of beliefs among American conservatives about perceived left-wing bias in American media, with the specific concern of "woke" bias in AI being the latest iteration on the theme. Thus the "general population" of the American public, specifically the American conservative public, is the valid context under which these terms are being discussed.

Conservatives feel like they live in a progressive hellscape because the 8% of the population that’s “woke” has disproportionate power in media and communications—which everyone is exposed to every day: https://hiddentribes.us/profiles/

That article refers to 8% of the population as "progressive activists," but of course most people who believe in progressive ideals are not activists, so attempting to imply that 98% of the population is conservative and anti-woke is disingenuous at best.

In the context of the posted article, even objecting to the presence of racist and offensive speech counts as "woke." Any positive representation of non-white, non-Christian and non-heteronormative demographics in the media beyond minimal tokenism, and certainly outside of the conservative narrative, is considered "woke."

Most Americans tend to identify as "socially progressive and financially conservative."

Political overrides are not acceptable, not in any direction.

If, hypothetically, a political party believes a lie, and makes it a core part of their platform, should the AI be forced to propagate that lie?

Asking ChatGPT to write fiction isn't "propagating" anything. You could argue that questions like "what are some reasons Republicans think Joe Biden stole the 2020 election?" may be prone to misinformation, but selectively editing certain topics ignores the fundamental problem that ALL ChatGPT queries are prone to misinformation.

I can get ChatGPT to mock men but not women. How is that appropriate?

At this early stage, filtering for misogyny may just be easier. My guess is that filters for misandry may give too many false positives.

Or they didn't add filters for misandry because they were only concerned about misogyny.

This is a classic pattern. For example, people have complained numerous times about Google's search suggestions and results for certain topics, e.g. "my boyfriend hits me" yielding sponsored information about domestic violence but "my girlfriend hits me" not yielding anything.

Wait until open source devs make their own AI. Vice will invert their narrative to attack it

This has already happened, someone trained a giant model on 4chan then unleashed on 4chan... hilarious stuff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efPrtcLdcdM

remind me the microsoft AI chat bot few years ago. 2 hours after being made public, people managed to make it say racist stuff and they prompted pulled th rig

> It's clearly biased in its outputs, but the article dismisses this concern as "the end result of years of researcher trying to mitigate bias against minority groups". The examples of bias are themselves cherry-picked, the kind of softball and cowardly questions a journalist would highlight. If you wanted to really show bias, you'd ask factual questions, where one cannot hide behind "oh this is actually the un-biase…

Well that was easy. Makes you wonder why a "professional" "couldn't" do it.

Any discussion about Jews in finance not held by Jews themselves is a hair away from devolving into an antisemitic /pol/ discussion about 'white genocide'. Any professional who touches the subject with even a ten foot pole immediately gains a nefarious following whether they want it or not. Having such a following of internet nazis is a liability for any professional reputation on a number of axes.

Edit: I'm curious what ChatGPT's answer the same question, but posed about Black or African American males would be. Would it state the fact of underrepresentation or would it refuse to answer?

It's not specifically a conservative issue. I can get chatgpt to write about reduction in scope of the federal government, strong state powers, the benefit of lowered taxes and regulations for business, and elimination of central banks. It happily writes about them. There's only one group of people who are upset, and it's about one group of topics. Note that I cannot get chatgpt to write about why Donald Trump is ter…

I can get chatgpt to write about reduction in scope of the federal government, strong state powers, the benefit of lowered taxes and regulations for business, and elimination of central banks. Given we assume Kantian the framework you just outlined

> you do not actually possess omniscient knowledge of reality

The usual response to this is that if you can't possess omniscient knowledge of reality, how could you possibly make a statement about reality

Imo the way out of this: talk about things being true in the context of logic only, the second causality comes into the picture the word "true" means something entirely different. Trying to reconcile the two is like trying to write a mathematical proof of the existence of God

That's categorically untrue. Giving a human a massive time advantage in chess doesn't suddenly make them beat chess AI.

Has that theory been tested? I would say though that being able to do things massively more quickly is effectively a superpower humans don't have, given we have finite time to ever meaningfully accomplish any task.

Yeah they do handicapped chess engine Vs grandmaster matches.

Time advantage is not been enough so what makes you think you a typical human could beat a chess AI given enough time if a GM can't?

You probably have to switch the computer off to give a typical human a fighting chance.

I am, once again, am baffled by the insistence that one product or service must always succumb to every group's values. If you want a "Conservative" version of ChatGPT, go build it. If you want a "Leftist" version of ChatGPT, go build it.

and I'm baffled by the insistence that "go build it" is a valid answer
