Wow I have been mixing 5g of creatine in my morning for the past several months, this is terrifying.

You don’t have Parkinson and you probably don’t take that much coffee Usual espresso from 42mm puck is 18g of coffee beans in, something around 40g of total coffee out. This has 90…150 mg of caffeine. The study focused on people having more than 300 mg daily. So don’t drink more than 2 cups per day and you’ll be fine.

I drink 3 moka pots each morning and usually one in the afternoon. I don’t have Parkinson’s right now, but for all I know I am pre diagnosis…. I have been getting tingling feelings in my fingers lately

Does anyone have advice for getting it down? I feel like no matter what I mix it with, it grosses me out and it becomes extremely challenging to get it down. I've tried pouring the dry powder in my mouth and just chugging it down quick as well as mixing it with various liquids, but they sandy texture makes me gag. I've managed to sustain taking creatine for a while but it never gets any better.

How are you mixing it? Spoon? Fork? Milk frother? Blender? The latter two might help.

Long term studies haven't shown any harm. I've taken 30g a day for well over a year now for both the physical performance and the cognitive benefits. I had brain fog following a bad COVID infection which this has helped with. My family also has a history of Alzheimer's and dementia (both sides), I figure it can't hurt. The only side effects I've encountered have been mild GI discomfort, and that only rarely (mostly w…

30g? That seems like a lot - isn’t the standard dose 5g? Did you build up incrementally and find that to be the best?

The standard studied dose _is_ 5g, but the common advice you hear in the gym community is that you will see cognitive benefits from 10-20g or more, depending on your body mass. 30g isn’t uncommon. And, many believe that 5g may be too little for optimal muscle gain, again depending on your body mass.

Adverse effects, as mentioned, are mostly GI-related, some people experience bloating especially with monohydrate. Another effect is an increase in water retention, which, in turn, means you need to drink more water. It’s generally regarded as safe for the kidneys unless you already have reduced kidney function.

So, overall, not really a big deal to take well over the studied 5g dose. Not to mention the recommended loading dose is 5g 4x daily.

Texture is independent of taste

Creatine is one of the most studied supplements in fitness and i don't think there ever was evidence it was harmful. Then again supplements mostly create expensive pee.

> supplements mostly create expensive pee Haha, that’s a great quote. Definitely going to borrow that one. Thanks!

The joke has been around forever. Big bang probably did the best “popular” showing off it.

If you dont eat meat nature will not help you here. It will change your life if you're vegan.

I don't know much about creatine, how's that supposed to help change one's life ? Is it from your experience ? A quick search learned me it helps for physical activities of the explosive type. edit: I saw your other comment, if you want to give more information that would be helpful, thanks. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48346947#48347768

For me its changed my life in terms of energy levels.

I have bad sleep apnea and have totally gotten off of prescription stimulants because of high dose creatine.

Creatine seems to have a strong postive effect on the brain when taken in doses higher than those taken for exercise.

Im not interested at all in creatine for exercise. Just google: "Creatine for sleep deprevation"

And as a vegan you dont get any creatine since you're not eating meat, so your body has to make it itself, which requires a ton of methylation and if you're like me and have bad genes for methylation (google MTHFR gene polymorphism) your body had a hard time with it as it is. So by supplmenting creatine you're reducing burden on your body greatly.
