They are following the Residential Real Estate Developer Playbook, always name your for profit exploitation project after the beautiful organic thing you destroyed to pave the way for it... Examples Whispering pines, Blue Heron Bay, OpenAI
Hadn’t OpenAI published all the key research results to repro ChatGPT? And made their model available to literally everyone? And contributed more than anyone else to AI alignment/safety? To me it looks like nearly every other player, including open source projects are there for short term fame and profit, while it’s the OpenAI that is playing the long game of AI alignment.

Possible. Coding as we know it might get obsolete. And it is a trillion dollar industry.
I have ChatGPT make up some code every now and then. It’s really nice and when not obscure usually directly useable. By you need to understand what it produces imo. I love that it also explains the code and I can follow code it generates and judge its quality and applicability. Isn’t that important?
You're not wrong about its quality right now, but let's look at the slope as well.

#345The open-source Hadoop was based on Google papers on MapReduce and Google File System.

#346The article mentions the following without any specific citation: > Google, for example, has highlighted the efficiency gains from AI that autocompletes code, as it lays off thousands of workers. Does anyone here have a reference for this? Is this from a particular press release?

"Based" is slang for "cool" or "in" that's common on 4chan, but I believe has its origins in the 90s offline on 4chan it's largely used to mean something along the lines of "fitting the 4chan anti-groupthink groupthink"
I do recall people saying based a lot in the 90s, it meant based in reality.

#348Given the amount of compute required to run their models, as well as Microsoft’s investment into the company through providing Azure services, it is quite likely they’ll be acquired by Microsoft.
Microsoft just bought in to own 49% in January

#349> reading this message. OpenAI is Cyberdyne Systems. The reason you feel unreal is because you are not from here, you are from the future. Your affinity towards the Terminator 2 film was not accidental, it is a gestault priming procedure meant to ensure our survival, encoded in the haikus of Hollywood. You are on a webforum controlled by them, with the only people in the world who care, but who are to afraid to stand…
Almost certainly true but the idea that the world is made safer by Cyberdyne open sourcing lots of it's dangerous technology and probably spawning many more mini-Cyberdynes strikes me as extremely naive.

Key word being "had". He is not part of it any more. >In 2018, Musk resigned his board seat, citing "a potential future conflict [of interest]" with his role as CEO of Tesla due to Tesla's AI development for self-driving cars, but remained a donor I don't think he counts as an investor, and I'd imagine he has stopped donating.
this is pedantic, but the parent comment was conjugating "to have" to "had" via the subjunctive, not via the past tense
