Any video surveillance system is foiled by a simple mask. Thieves who know to plan a break-in when you're away usually do their homework and come prepared.

This is why I think someone should market a cheap SIGINT tool that collects BT/BTLE/Wi-Fi data from nearby devices. I've got this setup running on a Raspberry Pi near my front door and it collects all sorts of useful data, even from people walking by on the sidewalk, 30 feet and two walls away. At some point, I'd love to explore vehicle emissions more, too.

Modern OSes randomize WiFi MAC addresses unless you ask them not to, and also do some randomization on BT MAC address.

I have found that the fog generating alarm systems are the ones that will stop burglars in their tracks. If they can't see, they're not going to hang about and if they've tooled up with NV then that's a whole different threat model.

NV isn't going to do anything to help with a thick fog. Honestly, with a thick enough white fog, ultra bright flood lights might be the move. Cause a white out basically.

I think the ZFS changes were due to needing a way to allow qnap systems to expand zfs pools. The raidz expansion features in openzfs probably took too long for qnap to wait.

I'll be snide and say it: "OpenZFS" and "stable" rarely belong in the same sentence (even though they seem to have a true 2.2 LTS these days).

There’s literally thousands of petabytes running on it in the wild, and it has continually proven to be one of, if not the most reliable filesystem, on the planet.

Joe blow running a beta release on his raspberry pi complaining about ram usage isn’t indicative of reality.

This seems like a good set of ideas if you can guarantee that you'll never have false alarms. I've had too many birds in warehouses and employees forgetting their codes to feel comfortable going full-hell-interior on alarm.

Birds? Yeah, perhaps. We didn't have any trouble with false alarms that I recall at one shop I worked at with a (relatively small, alarmed) warehouse space where the overhead door was usually open during warm days. I can see it happening, but the false alarms would happen regardless of the intensity of interior alarms.

And the system should not be armed when desirable people are inside, so that problem seems like it is for the birds.

When employees forget their codes and trip the alarm when they're the first ones into the shop at whatever time, they can just go outside to escape the hellish indoor torment. Not perfect, but not so bad either when the goal is to keep people out. :)

Perhaps the smoke should have a harder trigger than the noise, though, if for no other reason than it's a consumable that eventually needs to be fed more money every time it is activated.

I sold my Unifi APs, they broke DHCP over wifi multiple times. If you can't QA/Test basic 101 features like that, I have zero trust in your security.

What did you replace them with? I am starting to look into alternatives my self as I can see the noose they have around their user's neck's slowly starting to close.

HPE Instant On is pretty nice. Zero problems over the last seven years. It literally just works, including seamless handoffs between multiple APs.

That seems reasonable, I don't buy NAS for datacenters (just run a modest 80tb one for my home lab) but equivalent rackmount 16-bay ones from other vendors would be more expensive (maybe $5k-6k?) and with less polish.

It's wild but 80TB actually is modest compared to some of the enthusiasts on /r/homelab and /r/datahoarders that are running 300TB NAS servers at home. 80TB can still maybe fit in a single box. (8x10TB)

Ubiquiti has another cool device: a little travel router that you can configure with WireGuard to VPN into your home network and make yourself safer while on coffee shop and airport wifi.

It is nice to be able to access your local NAS and LLMs while away from home too.

It is indeed nice to be able to access local things while away from home but a VPN isn’t making you meaningfully safer on public WiFi networks. They’re all using proper encryption over the air now, I can count on one hand how many coffee shop networks I’ve seen without client isolation, and anything that matters should be happening over TLS regardless which means at worst the network operator sees your DNS requests.

Ubiquiti's biggest feature is no monthly recurring cost. I really hope they continue the streak on products like this. Seems like anything else bought up these days is switched to an MRR model with no vision into the long term viability.

That’s just patently not true for Ubiquiti. You enter the Enterprise space with them and you are paying monthly. Their very expensive Identity Enterprise monthly per user subscription and their per site support charges to be able to get help with their latest rushed release. Paying extra for Apple wallet support. And you don’t even get complete APIs in return, or proper SCIM integrations. Can’t even pull access logs…

Quite honestly it sounds like:

1. Your use case falls squarely into "you should be paying for support" territory. 2. You're setting things up incorrectly. You should be shipping logs, not scraping them when you think you need them.
